Richard Kuhn Obituary

Richard Michael Kuhn
1933-2009

Richard Michael Kuhn, 76, of Medford, Ore., husband of, Patricia Parish Kuhn, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at home in his sleep after a three-year adventure with cancer. He refused to give into the disease and lived life to the fullest to the end. Born May 22, 1933 in San Francisco, Calif., Richard was the son of Pearl Jones Kuhn and Leonard Michael Kuhn. He grew up in San Francisco and San Jose, Calif., attended San Jose State University where he met his future wife, Patricia Parish on a blind date. They were married in Los Gatos, Calif., March 7, 1959 and they moved immediately to Portland, Ore., with Commercial Credit Corporation. Six months later they moved to Medford, Ore., where Richard would be the manager for the southern Oregon and northern California office of Commercial Credit. In 1965, he was honored in N.Y. as one of eight managers in the country with an outstanding office. He was co-owner of Royal Mobile Homes Sales of Grants Pass and Medford for 17 years. He would later work in management for Jackson County Federal, Key Bank, Valley of the Rogue Bank and Liberty Bank.
To know Richard Michael Kuhn was to know laughter - to experience the quick wit he inherited from his mother, Pearl, who predeceased him in 2001. Years ago he would often tell his wife, "when you write my obituary, just put: "he was a lifetime motorist." but he was much more-this humble gentle giant of a man. His greatest involvement was with his family, his dog, and his tomatoes as he became known as Dr. Tomato and would make house calls for those who were in need of his expertise. He served for many years on the Jackson County Mental Health Board and the Peter Britt Musical Festival Board.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Parish Kuhn; son, Michael Kuhn, Centennial, Colo.; daughter, Allison Wilkerson, Sam's Valley, Ore.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Walshe Kuhn; son-in-law, Rodney Wilkerson; two grandchildren, Erin Kuhn and Ciara Kuhn; sisters, Barbara Cali and Beverly Gannon, brothers-in-law, Mark Cali (deceased), Warren Gannon, Ed Parish and Doug Parish; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Parish, Pamela Chynoweth and Loralee Parish; nephews, C.J. Cali, (Laura), Mark L. Cali (Nina); David Gannon (Kristin), Patrick Gannon, (Kristi), Edwin Leroux Parish; and nieces, Carlee Cali, Michelle Parish Wilson (Trevor), Leeann Meeker (Todd), Jenny Chynoweth (Chris).
A celebration of his life will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Friday, September 11th, at 11:00 a.m. with Liturgy of the Word. While not a Catholic, his wife and children were members of Sacred Heart and it was his wish to have his service there. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's School Scholarship Fund, 816 Black Oak Drive, Medford, OR. 97504 or Asante Hospice, 2960 Doctors Park Drive, Medford, OR, 97504.

By the open fireplace, late into night, hours I can feel were passing by.
The log and its warmth I believed would never fade, due I knew for this you cared.
The last move on the board was made and my dear brother Rich, I now feel, has chosen his way.
There is but only one way to travel and that is With God's Speed, for you Rich I know, this is of no greater need.
Luck was always by your side and god’s speed will only make sure it never dies
The best of memories I have in my mind of a man ever so naturally kind.
I never forgot and I shall never forget,
Please, I'm so sorry Pat.

Wish I had been at the service - thinking of all of you at this time. Rich always had the best laughter when our writer's group met at their house. What a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother to his whole family and a great part of the Rogue Valley community. We miss you, Rich.

We are so grateful to have known Rich Kuhn. His wit, wisdom, and deep hearty laugh (not to mention those tomatoes), made him the ideal next-door neighbor. He let us be more than just neighbors though- he let us into his big heart and treated us as family. Tender memories of times together will be treasured forever. We love you, Pat.

Rich was the father of a close friend of mine, Allison. Therefore, I had the honor of knowing this gentle, kind man for many years. He loved his wife and children very much and was always very kind to me and my family. I will miss him greatly, goodbye Richard.

Rich had the best laugh ever! I loved his easy-going manner, and he was a joy to work with at JCF. Kerm and I both enjoyed getting to know Rich and Patricia. Ken and Lola Daughtery also shared many enjoyable stories of their adventures. Our best to you, Patricia, and we are so sorry for your loss.
