FARMINGDALE -- Dale S. Guiou, 59, of Northern Avenue, Farmingdale, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, after a long illness, at the Veterans Affairs hospital at Togus.

He was born in Gardiner on Dec. 6, 1946, the son of Dale and Margaret (Oakes) Guiou. Following graduation from Gardiner Area High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served 22 years, retiring as an E8 senior chief. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medals (two awards), Battle "E" Ribbon, Sea Service Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and Four Good Conduct Awards. After his retirement he worked at Bath Iron Works for two years and for the DRMO at Brunswick Naval Air Station for nine years. Sonnie was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and being outside doing yard work and keeping his lawn neat and tidy. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife.

He was predeceased by his son, Aaron Gene Guiou, in 2004, his father in 2001, his mother in 1993, and his brother, Stanley (Bubzy) Guiou, in 1993.

Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Andrea (Boothby) Guiou of Farmingdale; his daughter, Angela Rose, and Chad of Gardiner, three grandsons, Alexander, Nicholas and Andrew Guiou, all of Farmingdale; daughter-in-law, Kendra Guiou, of Farmingdale; and many sisters and brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and very special friends.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Military honors will follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date at the Maine Veterans Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to a charity of your choice in Sonnie's memory.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the nurses and staff at the V.A. Togus Nursing Home 73 for the wonderful care, kindness and compassion they awarded Sonnie over the last five months.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Sonnie. He went into the Navy and I went into the Army and we kind of lost touch. When I came home I always meant to go and see him, but I never made it. We were friends since the 3rd grade at Randolph Grammar School and remained so until we graduated from Gardiner High School in 1965. I will always remember the great times we had at Bookers and running the roads of Randolph in those old cars we had. We sure had a lot of fun. We were both members of the"Randolph Indians." I am sad that I didn't stop to see him one more time. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We will miss our card games we used to have. Also the laughs as we sat around karen and Aldens table and chatted about things. He was a kind and caring person to everyone. He can take care of Gods' yard now. Our prayers are with you.
