Lucinda Hale Obituary

AUGUSTA -- Lucinda Ames "Cindy" Hale, MS, RD, CDE, 61, of Augusta, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus, in Waterville.

She had worked full time, until the day of admission, at her position with the Diabetes/Cardiac Care and Prevention Project of Maine Center for Disease Control in the Maine Department of Human Services.

Cindy was born into a farming family and lived first in Portland, Conn., until the age of 8 and then in Rome, Pa., until graduation from high school. She was an active 4-H member and was presented an Outstanding Girl trophy by her county and later represented her state at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago in 1967.

She attended Albright College in Reading, Pa., graduating in 1971. Her first positions were with Stauffer and Co. in the Philadelphia and Boston areas as general manager of several company cafeterias and restaurants.

In 1980, she went into training at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut to become a registered dietician. Her first position in this capacity was at Waldo County Hospital in Belfast. She chose this location to be close to a summer home on Southport Island that her family has enjoyed for generations. In 1982, she accepted a position with the Maine Diabetes Control Project, then under the sponsorship of Medical Care Development of Augusta, and later incorporated into Maine Department of Health Services. During her years there, she obtained a master's degree in adult education at the University of Southern Maine.

While living in Augusta, Cindy was very active in the South Parish Congregational Church, serving as deacon and chairwoman of that group, chairwoman of the church council, and as part of one pastoral search committee. Her greatest joy was that of being a member of the well-known church choir.

She is survived by her mother, Miriam V. Hale of Augusta; her father, Chester K. Hale Sr. and his wife Muriel, of Owl's Head; a sister, Deborah A. Barrett of Rome, Pa.; two brothers, Chester K. Hale Jr. and his wife Sharon, of Warren Center, Pa., and Jeffrey D. Hale and his wife Nancy, of Norwich, N.Y.; also numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visitation. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the South Parish Congregational Church, Augusta. Burial will be in the Decker Cemetery, Southport, at the convenience of the family.

To Cindy's family:

I am just returning from a week long conference and going through e-mails and found the e-mail from the Maine CDC telling of Cindy's death. I am so sorry to hear this. Cindy and I worked together on several committees over the last several years. She was a kind, thoughtful and dedicated professional who continued to work diligently even as it was increasingly clear that her health was deteriorating.

My thoughts go to her family. Valli Geiger (Augusta, ME)

Dear Aunt Mimi, Uncle Chet, Debbie, Chip, Jeff and extended family,
Joan called with the news late Tuesday. I was so unprepared and saddened that my cousin had passed away. Cindy was such a sweet, loving and kind soul. She helped so many people with health issues while she was struggling with her own. What an amazing person. I cannot be with you on Friday, however, please know that I am with you in spirit. I pray that you will rejoice in all of Cindy's accomplishments and remember the joy she brought to the family.
With much love,
Ellen Hale Tufts
