Peter was born in Oconto, Wis., a son of Robert and the late Norma Perry. His family moved to the Waterville area when he was only 1. He attended local schools and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1973 and the University of Maine in 1977, with an engineering degree. He married JoAnne Stanhope, of Portland, in 1977.
Peter worked for S.D. Warren, Somerset, for many years, then worked for Nalco as a principal consultant in the paper industry, until his illness prevented him from working in 2003. With that job he traveled to Europe, South America and Asia and would often call home to tell his nieces and nephews of his travels.
At home he loved working on his house and cars. He had a special joy of restoring old European sports cars, MGs in particular. He was an avid race fan and in his later years raced as a hobby. Pete was also a Red Sox and Patriots fan. He enjoyed special times with family and friends camping at Sebago and Moosehead lakes, and trips to Cape Cod.
He was also an avid reader with a special interest in books on African exploration. His quiet times were spent with his kitty friends, especially Jester, the explorer, who has gone on ahead, and Miss B, the sweet, who remained close in his final illness. Special memories of Pete will be his quick wit and dislike of all things bean -- green or otherwise.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, JoAnne; father, Robert, of Benton; brothers John Perry and wife Peggy and Andrew Perry and his wife, Beth, all of Winslow.
Peter is also survived by nephew Christopher Perry, his wife, Amy, and their children: Matthew, Grant and Mason of Florida; his sister, Kathryn Perry, of Bowdoinham; nephew James and his wife, Jen, of Ohio, and his sisters Alison and Andrea of Winslow; brothers-in-law Gary Stanhope of Arundel, Martin Stanhope and his wife, Teresa, of Topsham and their children: Nicholas and Kristin; special friends of the heart: Scott and JoAnne Hopkins and their children, Matthew and Hannah, most recently of Shapleigh; and Rick and Patsy MacInnes of Baltimore, Md., and their children Brian and Kate.
A special thanks to Dr. Clifton Smith and staff, and Dr. Anthony Pakiam for going the distance. To the staff at Oak Grove Nursing Home for their continued care and concern; and the staff and volunteers at HR Hospice who came in at the end and provided excellent care for both Pete and his family members during some difficult times.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Veilleux Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, ME 04901.
Donations may be made to HealthReach Hospice, 10 Water St. Waterville, ME 04901.

I can not think of anyone I enjoyed working with more than Peter Perry. Our frequent travels together and phone conversations were always a great learning experience and joy. Peter taught me more about paper making than any years of experience could have. I never hesitated to say that Peter Perry is the smartest person I know. But, it was his views on life that kept us laughing and enjoying the moment. He was always quick with a joke or a great story, and our travels provided many good stories. I am thankful for the times he thought of me and let me know via an e-mail or phone call.
I wish I could have spent more time with him these last few years, but what time I did get with him I really enjoyed, hunting ground hogs in the backyard, camping with his Dad in my driveway, sharing a meal with him at the home. Even in my last visits the one thing that was always there was the spark in his eyes as he listened to your story and even though he could not add his sentiment I always knew he understood and was enjoying the time we had.
Thank you Peter Perry, you have made me a better professional and person, and I will miss you. My thoughts are with you JoAnne and I hope we can get together soon.

JoAnne,
I had the privilege of getting to know Pete after being hired by "Father Bob" at Scott, Winslow ... whew, was it that long ago!? Over the years we worked together a lot, he was one of the toughest customers I ever had, which made me better. I think Pete was the smartest guy I've ever worked with and I learned an immense amount from him over the years. I missed seeing him these last 10 years I've been over here in Asia.
Pete was much more than just "smart", the intelligence that you could see burning in his eyes, his passion, and the keen wit and humor in his always ready smile gained him a lot of friends and fans in his world travels.
I always loved talking with him about cars and racing ..., when we weren't fixing paper machines ..., and some day I hope we get to do some "hot laps" together on a track somewhere.
I'm sure it's been tough the last few years and even tougher now, my deepest sympathies to you. But as Pete used to say "life goes on" so after the pain and the loss I wish you frequent flashbacks and lots of big smiles from all the good times with one of the worlds finest souls.
We will all miss him but are all better for having known him and I will be raising a glass in his honor more than once.
All my best,
Jack Thomas

JoAnne, I got the opportunity to go on an audit with Pete several years ago and we drove up to northern Canada together. It was a great trip and it gave me a chance to get to know Pete better.
My wife Connie and I have you in our prayers, and hope you find peace in the fact that Pete is no longer suffering. He was someone I looked up to.

I was saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. He was a wonderful person. I first met Peter when he interviewed me for a scholarship in high school. He checked in with me every year through college and I continued to enjoy visiting with him at UMaine alumni events for years after I graduated. My condolences to Peter’s family and friends.

Pete was a valued asset at Nalco. If it could happen, he had experienced it, and you could count on Pete to tell us the pros and cons, so we didn't have to suffer like he did at the time. I haven't worked with him for almost ten years, but remember him fondly.

I had worked closely with Pete for several of his Nalco years, with admiration, with great respect for his talent and knowledge, and with smiles for his quick wit and teachings. He was greatly missed at the onset of his health problem and his physical presence will forever be missed. I will always remember the picture you have shared herein. To Andy & Beth and all the Perry Family ,the Love and care you showed to your Brother was truly evident to all of us who know you. Your many visits to see Peter at the Nursing home and bringing him " Special Treats" really showed him your Love and affection towards him. I am sure Peter knew how much you loved him Andy & Beth. Trusting In faith Peter is now without pain and suffering and is enjoying what we all strive to achieve and that is the after life out there in the Great Beyond. May knowing that your friends share in your pain and sorrow bring you some comfort at this difficult time you are going through .

I have fond memories of working with Pete at the mill. His shining smile, great wit, and his willingness to help me learn more about papermaking often cross my mind. I can't tell you how many times the saying "icecubes in the wet end" has brought a smile. Pete gave me those words. Sending my condolences to you JoAnne and your family.
