Charles Moore Obituary

Charles G. Moore III
PORTLAND - Charles G. Moore III, known to most as "Kip", passed away peacefully on Jan. 26, 2015, after a long battle with prostate cancer at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Kip was born on Oct. 23, 1943 in Plainfield, NJ to Dorothy and Charles Gilbert Moore. He grew up in upstate New York where he graduated from Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY. While attending Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, Kip developed a lifelong interest in computers; while a student, he was on the team that helped develop the BASIC computer language and the Dartmouth Time Sharing System. After graduating with BA in Mathematics, Kip moved on to The University of Michigan, from which he received a PhD in Computer and Communication Sciences. He taught Computer Science at Università di Bologna, Université de Grenoble and Cornell University. In 1975, Kip returned to Ann Arbor to work at Automated Data Processing and raise his growing family.
In 1982, Kip moved to New York City and became a general partner at the venture capital firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson and Stowe (WCAS) where he made investments in early stage information processing companies. At WCAS Kip nurtured the growth and development of more than twenty investments, eight of which went public.
In 1992, a love of the sea and desire to be closer to his children led Kip to move to Portland, where he purchased a former Coast Guard station on Little Diamond Island. He renovated "The Boathouse" and it became his beloved summer home and a favorite gathering place for family and friends. Happiest when the house was full of people and activity, Kip delighted in hosting an annual concert for the island's residents and the annual Little Diamond Island Labor Day Regatta. He loved his garden and proudly planted daffodils, cosmos and dahlias around the property every year.
In Portland, as an Angel investor, Kip provided both mentorship and early-stage investment in Maine-based technology companies, with a focus in the areas of software, computer services and data communications. In addition to nurturing numerous Maine businesses, he shared his love of the Maine coast by serving as a Director of the Maine Audubon and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. Kip believed deeply in philanthropy and gave generously to many local non-profit organizations.
Kip loved sailing, skiing and traveling. Throughout their early years, Kip took his three children on adventures including rafting in the Grand Canyon and biking in France. In more recent decades, he sailed with friends and family along the Maine coast in the summer and took annual sailing trips in many exotic places, including Greece, Morocco, Thailand, Croatia, Australia and the Caribbean.
Kip is survived by his wife Meryl Nierman; his brother Robert Moore and sister-in-law Kathleen Moore of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; his daughter Jennifer Vandekreeke and her husband Robin Vandekreeke of Sydney, Australia, his son Nathaniel Moore of Portland, his son Christopher Moore and his wife Bree LaCasse of Portland; his five grandchildren Phoebe and Chase Vandekreeke, Oliver LaCasse Moore, and Gabriel Moore; his two nieces Kelly Kelso and her husband Jimmy Kelso of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. and Shannon Millet and her husband Kevin Millet of Cold Springs Harbor, NY; and many loving grandnieces and grandnephews. Kip was loved by many and will be missed deeply.
A celebration of Kip's life will be held on Monday, Feb. 2nd at 4 p.m. at Ocean Gateway in Portland. The family welcomes all who were touched by Kip's kindness and generosity.
