Lindsey Sweeney Obituary

Lindsey Jean Sweeney, 19
PORTLAND - Lindsey Jean Sweeney, 19, died unexpectedly on July 16, 2015, at her home in Portland. It had been several years that Lindsey courageously battled epilepsy. She was born on Feb. 23, 1996, in Portland, the daughter of Stephen M. and Jean Crawford Sweeney.
Lindsey graduated from Deering High School, class of 2014. After graduation she went on to pursue a degree in early childhood education at the University of Southern Maine. This was indeed her calling, after all, she established a profound reputation and level of respect over many years with the Summer at Breakwater camp. She was a consistently energetic inspiration to young girls and boys who attended the very place that deeply influenced her life. Lindsey dedicated her life to family and friends. She was exceptional at expressing her love and compassion for others which always showed through her ability to nurture relationships. Lindsey's capacity to deeply care for others enabled her to maintain close bonds with a vast network of friends. She kept friendships from early childhood incredibly strong while always reaching out and welcoming new people into her life. Her sweet smile, huge heart and love of life will carry on through family and friends.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her boyfriend Jacob Coon; her brothers, Chris Sweeney and his wife Amy of Waterbury, Conn., Mike Burleson and his wife Melissa of Gorham, Chris Burleson and his wife Lisa of Cape Elizabeth; nieces Alia Sweeney, Madison Burleson and nephew Wyatt Burleson.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at 11 a.m., at St. Hyacinth Cemetery, Stroudwater Street, Westbrook. To offer condolences and share memories with the family please go to

My deepest sympathy to Lindsey's family, boyfriend and friends. She has left this earth far too soon. Lindsey has also left her footprint on many, many hearts. Cherish each and every memory of her. My son, Jake, knew Lindsey from Breakwater's camps, where he was a camper and then a CIT. and always spoke highly of her. She was a very special young woman who blessed everyone she knew/met with her beauty and spirit. Always keep her in your heart and thoughts.

My sweet girl. You will always be my daughter-in-law. I wanted to live a lifetime with you and my son. I miss you so much. I know you are close and love us all, but I miss you. The boys asked when you were coming over again and I did not know what to say. I cannot believe you are gone. Love you so much.

To the Sweeney family,
We are so sorry. Lindsey was such a bright and loving young lady. No matter what kind of a day one of our players was having, Lindsey always took the time to cheer them up and get them back on track. She was always there no matter what it took. Even when she got injured during her senior season, she was right there at every practice encouraging everyone to do better. She was a captain that we could go to at anytime and she would make sure it got taken care of. I am blessed to have 2 daughters that went to Deering with you. It is so nice to hear all the nice things the 2 of them have shared with us about you. Lindsey, you will be sadly missed but I am honored to have been able to coach you. You have touch so many lives in your 19 years and I am glad to have been one of them. Thank you for the memories.

Lindsey is great person and all of us can take something from her. Though this loss is sudden and painful to all that know her we can all reflect on what a genuinely nice young woman she is. What I remember most about Lindsey was her infectious smile. She really did light up a room. Every time she visited our home, she left a note on our kitchen chalkboard that said Lindsey was here with a heart next to it. I smiled every time I saw that note. I am grateful to have known her. There really are no words to express my sympathy, only that sharing a sweet memory will help you to know she touched my heart in an everlasting way.
