PORTLAND -- Peter James Bennett, 95, of Portland, died on Nov. 21, 2014. He was born in Portland, on June 29, 1919, the son of John and Elizabeth (Vestale) Bennett (DiBenedetto). He attended Portland schools.
Mr. Bennett owned a shoe repair shop and worked as a men's clothing salesman at Kennedy's of New England. As a well known boxing referee Pete was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post 17, the Italian Heritage Center, the Knights of Columbus Council 101, the Portland Eagles, the Portland Elks Lodge #188, and the VFW Post 6859.
He was predeceased by his son Steven P. Bennett; seven brothers, Frank, Louis, Sam, James, Emery, John, Anthony, and one special sister, Lucia.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marguerite N. Bennett; his son Peter John and wife Rachel S. Bennett, his daughter Ramona M. and husband Vincent L. Marcisso, Jr., and Allen J. and wife Ida Bennett who was like a son. He is also survived by grandsons Anthony N. Marcisso and Stefanie, Christopher V. and wife Elisabeth Marcisso, Nicholas A. Marcisso, granddaughter Alexandra A. Stocks; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland, on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at 10 a.m. THERE WILL BE A PRIVATE BURIAL.
