Rolf Diamon Obituary

Rolf Diamon, 66

WINDHAM - Rolf Diamon, 66, died on Sept. 16, 2017, while hiking Mount Washington with his son, Nick.

Rolf grew up in South Portland. He earned a B.A. at USM, an M.A. at Case Western Reserve, and a Ph.D. in sociology at Boston University. Rolf was most fulfilled as a sociology professor at St. Joseph College in Standish, and most recently at USM.

Rolf and his family lived in Mont Vernon, N.H. in the 1990s, where he served on the school board. Rolf was also a contributor to his wife Gail's family business, Dodge the Florist. He was a perfectionist who gave 110 percent to any chosen endeavor. Rolf was a private person who preferred intellectual discourse over social interaction. He would have found it ironic that his death made the regional news.

Rolf was a loyal husband of 40 years, and a proud and dedicated father to his sons, Josh and Nick. Josh and his wife Ashlee are expecting his grandchild in a couple months. He also leaves his close sister, Faith Charity; and his aunt/Godmother, Sally Wigon.

Family and close friends will celebrate his life privately.

Rolf and I were coworkers at Home Depot. Neither one of us are the type to ask nosey personal questions so all we knew about one another is our interaction in the work place. I miss him a lot.

Rolf was one of the most influential professors I have had. I am grateful everyday for his teachings and have great respect for him and his work. He changed my life in a way that has made me a better human being -- which this world could surely use more of.

I took Rolf's Sociology of the Environment course back in the mid 2000's. He was relentless in the best way possible - pushing me and my classmates to challenge our realities -- to take a critical and realistic eye to our our behaviors and the consequences of them. He was the first to introduce me to the lifecycle, of, well, just about everything. To this day, I still have a bit of guilt indulging in my morning cup of coffee, but can rest easy knowing that it is an informed decision rather than one I'm mindlessly indulging in.

The world could use more professor's like Rolf Diamon. To his family and friends, I'm so very sorry for your loss and am sending all of my love to you during this challenging time. May his memory be eternal.

So very sorry for your family's loss. As a Sociology major, I had Rolf for a handful of classes and he was my advisor my senior year. He was always so kind. My daughter had pneumonia the week our final paper was due and I stayed in the hospital with her. No questions asked, no notes required, Rolf told me to take the time I needed with my daughter and he'd accept my paper when I could get it to him with no penalty. He cared about our learning, and he cared about our humanity. It was a privilege to learn from him.

He was an amazing professor and even though I only had one class with him his introduction to sociology was one that had a tremendous positive impact on my life. He will always be remembered to me as a teacher who helped me understand how to find myself, my purpose and my true path in life. May he Rest In Peace

Prof Diamon was one of my first sociology professors. He is the reason I entered the program at USM. He was such a smart and dedicated teacher. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am deeply saddened by your loss. Rolf was a colleague of mine in the USM Sociology Department for many years! I have posted a link to this site to my Facebook page--when I posted news of his passing there earlier this week, MAN of his former students expressed their sorrow and remembered how much they appreciated his classes!
