Walter Hayes Obituary

Walter L. Hayes, 84

WELLS - Walter L. Hayes, 84, of Burnt Mill Road, passed away June 24, 2005 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford surrounded by his family, after a period of failing health.

He was born in Kennebunk on April 24, 1921, a son of Harry and Goldie (Bennett) Hayes. He had worked as a truck driver for the Maine Department of Transportation for more than 30 years.

Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 734th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. # 6548 Kennebunk Post. On April 7 he received the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award at the State House in Augusta.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff, volunteers and residents of the Greenwood Center for the outstanding care and friendship Walter received during his stay there.

Walter was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Myrtle Tufts Hayes in December of 2000.

Surviving are two sons, Patrick Hayes of Wells, and James Hayes of Wakefield, N.H.; two daughters, Jean Welch and Jolene Hayes; a brother, Harold Hayes and his wife Olive; and a sister, Sally LeBrun, all of Wells; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St,, North Berwick, where a funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 29 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. of the Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick will officiate. Interment with Military Honors following in Pine Hill Cemetery in Wells.
