Victor Obninsky Obituary

Victor Peter Obninsky 1944-2016 Victor Peter Obninsky passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Vic was born to Peter Victor Obninsky and Anne Donston Obninsky at Cottage Hospital in San Rafael on October 12, 1944. He was raised in Black Point and attended Novato School. A 1962 graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, Obninsky received a B.A. in History from Columbia in 1966 and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1969. He was Class Secretary for many years of his high school class and was a member of Andover's Alumni Council in the mid-1990's. He was listed in a number of Who's Who publications, in addition to being listed in the National Registry of Pre-eminent Lawyers. Obninsky practiced law in Marin and Sonoma Counties from 1970 until his death. He moved to Sonoma after his divorce in 2002 and enjoyed life there, but always considered Black Point his home. He was President of the Marin County Bar Association in 1990, coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for 11 years and was a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He was active on many bar committees until his death and tried to improve the image of lawyers in the community. He was a staunch Goldwater Republican, loyal member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and a great fan of the Cal Golden Bears football team as well as his beloved New York Yankees. Obninsky also was a faithful member of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Russian Nobility Association in America as well as the Association of Former Russian Naval Officers in San Francisco. He is survived by numerous loving friends and will be dearly missed. Victor was laid to rest in the Russian Imperial Navy plot at the Serbian Cemetery, Colma, on March 22, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the deceased has requested charitable contributions to any of the following: American Diabetes Association, Marin County Legal Aid Society, Ritter House, Marin County Humane Society, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

A mere acquaintance at Andover, forgotten for many years, a mere correspondent for a few years, then, suddenly at our 50th reunion, he became a good and trusted friend. That was our Vic. Once you spent any time with him he became treasured.
Rest in arms of our Lord, in whom you firmly believed.

Victor, always conducted himself as a gentleman. He was a well respected attorney. He often told amusing stories re his many travels- such as- a sunny day in Estonia. May his heavenly travels be as pleasant. Ret. Judge Gary W. Thomas
