Nancy Kelly Obituary

Nancy W. Kelly
Nancy W. Kelly, wife of Philip D. Miller, died in her home in Richland Township on Saturday, January 27. She was 73. Born Nancy Ann Woodford to Ruth (Applegate) and Clifford Woodford in Washington, D.C., she graduated there from Woodrow Wilson High School and from Southern Seminary. She married Kerwin F. Kelly in 1951. They moved to Quakertown in 1962 where they started and ran Kelly Construction Company. Mr. Kelly died in 1985. In 1989, Mrs. Kelly married Philip D. Miller, the president of Quakertown National Bank. In addition to Mr. Miller, Mrs. Kelly is survived by her daughter, Pamela W. Kelly of Brooklyn, New York, and her sons, Kerwin W. Kelly of New Orleans, Louisiana, Stephen P. Kelly of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, and James W. Kelly of Sharpsburg, Georgia. She was predeceased by her grandson, Kyle Kelly. She had eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. An accomplished and avid pilot, Mrs. Kelly took part in the Great Transatlantic Air Race in 1969, a race commemorating the first transatlantic crossing 50 years earlier by Alcock and Brown. In a twin-engine Cessna with the seats removed to accommodate extra fuel tanks, she flew from New York to London enduring freezing temperatures, a malfunctioning radio, and dangerous weather conditions in a record time of 22 hours, 31 minutes, and 57 seconds to win the race as the fastest woman in a light aircraft. That record still stands. At the gala in honor of the winners, she was greeted by Prince Philip, the husband of the Queen of England, who asked her if she would ever want to go through anything like that again, to which she replied, When is the next race! Services: A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. in United Church of Christ, Park Avenue, Quakertown on Thursday, February 1, 2007. Calling hour 1 p.m. The Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral Home, 20 N. Ambler St., Quakertown, is in charge of arrangements. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Life Span Quakertown or a hospice of your choice.

Dear Phil, Pam, Biz, Stephen, and James: I was so sad to be in Liberia during the funeral. I had asked Nan to "hold on" until I got back when I talked to her on 1/19, the day before I left. Obviously, it was too much to ask. I am glad the suffering is over. I know what a great husband and caregiver you were, Phil. She spoke of you every time we talked. I am very sad that she is gone. And know you are, too. All of you. I was really pleased that Chris and Beth could be there to represent our arm of the family! Love and hugs. Ann

I love my dear Aunt Nancy! She was my best friend and defender, pure and simple. With a wonderful sense of humor and down-to-earth sincerity, Aunt Nancy always stuck by me and helped me with life decisions. What a loving, tolerant and fascinating woman she was! Dearest Nan, I shall miss you! Much love to you, your niece Scottie Kelly Curtis

I shall never forget the wonderful lunches and sterling conversations with Nancy at her beautiful home in Quakerstown. My sister, Peggy Kelly, was fortunate to have her as one of her best friends. My wife Norma and I send our heartfelt condolences to all who loved this remarkable woman.

Biz, Pam, Steve and James--45 years ago I was your "sitter." I always adored your mother, Nancy....when she entered a room it came alive, just because she was there. Her sense of humor and zest for life were truly admirable. I only regret that our life paths didn't cross more often. I know Nancy's whole family will miss her very much...our loss is Heaven's gain. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

"Nancy" What can I say? She was a very special person in my life for the last 32 years. She was someone who would listen when I needed a good listener. We shared lots of fun stories about our families. I will miss seeing her every Thursday sitting at her "Spot" at the table doing her crossword puzzle for the day. God saw it was time to end her suffering. May God bless your family in this time of sorrow.

I remember your mother from Q high school days; she always extended a warm welcome when we all showed up at the poolhouse. Dignified and lovely as ever. My condolences to your family.

We just loved Nancy! She married our Uncle Phil not long after losing our parents, and she became a source of love and laughs, mentor and advisor, book reviewer and storyteller to us all. So many great memories! With love; Bryan, Steve and Andrea.

Our dad, Clifford Woodford II, loved his sister dearly. I know that Nancy and he spoke on the phone almost every Sunday. He always referred to her as" little sister." Our entire family will always fondly remember all the times we got to visit one another. Nancy will always be remembered as an
incredibly strong and amazing woman.
