Barbara Ellen Wyman-Sun

July 30, 1959- June 20, 2007Passed away on June 20, 2007 while at home in San Jose surrounded by loved ones after a long and heroic struggle against pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband Sid, daughter Nicole age 11, and son Justin age 8; her parents Don and Beth, brother Jeff, and niece Mary.Barbara possessed a great life spirit. All that knew her felt a great warmth and energy from her. She had a remarkable ability to connect with people at a deep, personal level . This ultimately propelled her into a career as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. This same skill helped her in her previous careers as a journalist and waitress, and as a volunteer at the Santa Clara County Suicide and Crisis Hotline. Her great compassion and empathy were only matched by her creative energy, passion for fun, and her tremendous sense of humor. Barbara's greatest joy was her kids, pouring out endless love and energy to nurture, protect, encourage and guide them. She will be deeply missed by her family, and by the many friends that she has made throughout her tragically short life.Barbara was born in Berkeley, CA but spent most of her life in the South Bay. She grew up in Saratoga and Morgan Hill, graduating from Live Oak High School and San Jose State University with a bachelors and masters degree.Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 7th, at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment located at 1146 University Avenue in San Jose. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hacienda Involved Parents and Staff (HIPS), 1290 Kimberly Drive, San Jose, CA 95118 or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245.

Barb's gracious and loving spirit is deeply missed by all her family, friends, co-workers and those she helped professionally, as was so eloquently expressed at her Memorial Service.

Barb truly was a "Shooting Star" passing into and out of all our lives much too quickly.

Barb's life was an example of courage, patience, generosity and love. It was an honor and pleasure to enjoy her friendship for over 20 years, and I will miss her terribly.

I only found out about Barbara's passing today July 5, 2007. I no longer live in the area and rarely read the local papers on-line. Today I did. And I was so sad to see Barbara's name. I worked with Barbara at Suicide & Crisis from 1990-1994. She was one of my favorite people there and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to work alongside her. I enjoyed our talks so much. She had a great laugh and smile. She was so easy to talk to and she was such a wonderful listener. I had not heard from her since leaving SACS, but I never forgot her. And I never will.
To Sid, your children, and family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Barb's passing. We met in graduate school and have remained friends over the years. I've always admired her warm and gentle spirit, her creativity, and her sense of fun. Her dedication to her family showed up in everything she did. I was so inspired by her courage and strength throughout her illness and will miss her presence tremendously.

The Sun family were our neighbors on Pershing Ave. We had many great times together and like everyone who knew Barb, we will miss her great spirit and vitality as well

Barb was a uniquely wonderful person. She made everyone feel special. I loved watching her create a family with Sid and I used to joke that they had one of the few functional families I have known. Barb was so generous with her time and energy. These gifts leave us all who knew her richer . . . and missing her all the more. Her courage and spirit in fighting the cancer were a marvel. She had so much more to give and stayed around as long as she could to give it. She created a truly impressive community around herself, which I am sure will carry forward her spirit. Thank you Barb, for everything.

When asked "who has truly inspired you?" My answer has always been Barb, Barb, Barb. As a mother, as a community leader, a wife, a therapist, and a friend. I have never known a person had more life, love, wisdom, sparkle, creativity and zen patience and wisdom than Barb. Barb has honestly, truly, wholeheartedly, made this world a better place. I had often wished that I were young enough and lucky enough for the Sun family to adopt me.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Condolence.

Barb was a dear friend of our family's. I met her in 1994 as the Center for Human Development where we worked and trained together as psychotherapists. I recognized immediately that she was a remarkable therapist with tremendous intelligence, compassion and integrity, and she was held in the highest esteem by her colleagues. She has remained one of the finest people i've ever had the privilege of knowing.

Barb was kind, compassionate and wonderfully creative. And she was generous and silly and smart as a whip. And Barb was courageous.

She will be tremendously missed by so many people whose lives she touched. And she will remain in our hearts always.
