Stephen Koelzer Obituary
August 13, 1946 - July 26, 2021
Resident of Sunnyvale
Stephen "Steve" Mathias Koelzer passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by: his wife, Sandra of 34 years; their four children, Kyle, Christopher, Geoffrey, and Hannah; two children from his previous marriage, Stephany and Harry; his sister, Katie Clifford. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Marilyn, brother Loren, and sister Loralyn.
Born in Fresno, CA on August 13, 1946, he grew up in the central valley of Bakersfield and Arroyo Grande, living along the California coast his whole life. Known by many as "Mr. Science," Steve followed a lifelong quest to understand how things work. As a child, he wanted to know the universe on a molecular level--by the age of 12, he knew chemistry was his calling. He attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, earning his B.S. (1971) and M.S. (1980) in Chemistry. Steve worked at Shell Oil, Lockheed, CuTek, Technic, Inc., and co-owned K&K Consulting.
An artist and lover of fine craftsmanship, Steve created beautiful stained glass pieces. He taught adult education courses on the subject at local community colleges and loved working with special needs students. Most who met him knew his passion for knowledge and teaching. He will be missed and cherished by his family and friends.
Visitation is on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 11:30AM until noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1300 Grant Road, Los Altos, CA, followed by a funeral service. Current COVID-19 guidelines are kindly observed. Interment will be at 2PM at Los Gatos Memorial Park, Los Gatos, CA.
