Joseph McCabe Obituary

Joseph (Joe) H. McCabe, 83, of West Hartford passed away Thursday, August 8, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. Joe was born in Middletown, CT, December 15, 1929, son of the late Harry and Anna (Doyle) McCabe. He had very fond memories of growing up in the house on Hunting Hill Avenue with his parents, brothers, and sister. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1948, and Wesleyan University, class of 1952 where he played as first baseman on Wesleyan's Varsity baseball team.
After college, Joe went to work at Arrow, Hart and Hegenan, in Hartford, as a Cost Estimator. In 1955, Joe accepted a position at Stanley Works, in New Britain, CT, which resulted in a 40-year career at Stanley, attaining position of International Credit Manager.
Joe enjoyed playing cards and ping pong, belonging to the Stanley golf league, telling corny jokes, having a good laugh, savoring a tasty meal, spending time with his friends, Boston Red Sox games, participating in several fantasy baseball leagues, and of course, spending time with his family. Joe was a very kind man, who always had a smile on his face. He was a source of strength and an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren who will miss him dearly.
Joe is survived by his children Thomas McCabe of Hartford, Patricia and her husband William Henson of Canton and Sheila McCabe of West Hartford; by his grandchildren: Sean McCabe, Laura Ferguson and Michael Henson; several nephews and nieces: John McCabe and his wife Leslie of Worcester, MA, Douglas McCabe of Saratoga Springs, NY, Joseph E. McCabe of West Hartford, Bruce McCabe and his wife Jannifer of Bountiful, UT, Janet Cahill of Wilmington, MA, Jean McCabe and her husband Dean Farina of Martha's Vineyard, Joyce O'Rourke and her husband Joseph of West Hartford and by his sister-in-law, Elisabeth McCabe of Stuart, FL, and many great-nephews and great-nieces. Joe is also survived by the mother of his children, Roberta McCabe of Manchester, CT. Joe was predeceased by his brothers, John McCabe, James McCabe, his sister, Rita McCabe, and by his beloved daughter, Maureen McCabe Dickerson.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 11, from 2-5 PM at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. The funeral procession will leave from the Molloy Funeral Home on Monday August 12 at 9:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at The Church of St. Helena, 30 Echo Lane, West Hartford at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford. Donations in Joe's name may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association at www.jdrf.org. So sorry to hear about your Aunt Rita as well.

I worked with Joe years ago at Stanley. He always had a smile on his face and ready with a joke. Joe never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Joe was a very sweet man with a very kind heart and will be missed by all who knew him. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Dear Tom and Family,
My heartfelt sympathies go out to you all for the loss of your father and "best friend". I pray that he is now resting peacefully in Gods loving arms. I hope that through his warm memories you will be comforted. And know that you are thought of throughout these days to come. My sincere best wishes to you all.

Joe,

I am personally grateful for the nearly two decades you were a part of my life and my friends lives. Above and beyond the fantasy leagues and the interactions there, you inspired me to play the games with a sense of humor, treating people fairly, speaking your mind when needed, and above all persevering hardships with humor and grace and being a true gentleman and family man.

Although you are not here on this mortal plane, rest assured we'll all keep your spirit alive. In the meantime, when you catch up with The Mick and Teddy Ballgame, tell them I was asking for them.

On behalf of President/Chief Administrator David Eustis and the entire Northwest Catholic High School community, I offer my deepest sympathy on the passing of Joseph McCabe.

Joseph's niece, NWC Director of Guidance Joyce O'Rourke, and his great nephews Dan O'Rourke '01 and Timothy O'Rourke '03 are all valued members of the NWC community, so we mourn Joseph's loss along with all who love him.

Please know that we will remember Joseph and his entire family in a special way during our daily prayers this week and also at our first school-wide Mass in September. We are very sorry for your loss.
