Donald Russell Ekblad, a beloved brother, son, and friend, passed away on October 28, 2025, in Wahkon, MN, at the age of 83. Born on Christmas Day in 1941 in Saint Paul, MN, Don was the son of William and Eleanore Ekblad.
Don's journey took him from the rural expanses of Forest Lake, MN, to Oakland, CA, during World War II and back again, where he later graduated from Forest Lake High School in 1959 as an honor student, landing in the top ten of his class. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His career involved significant roles at Northern States Power and Control Data, but he truly made his mark as a business owner, starting a data space company that manufactured access floors for tech firms.
Don embraced the simple joys in life. He loved to garden, fish, hunt, play golf and tennis, and in his younger days, he was a passionate baseball player. A large 22-foot boat was his pride, often seen cutting through the waters of Leech Lake. Known for his impressive knack for building and repairing nearly anything, he was also a fan of old cars, and reading. Above all, Don had a generous spirit and was always there to lend a helping hand to others.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanore Ekblad, his father and personal hero, William S. Ekblad, brother, James Ekblad, other family, Benjamin Anderson, Steven Ekblad and Art Peterson.
Don is survived by his siblings; Richard (Pat) Ekblad of McGregor and Burnsville, Kathleen Peterson of Oakdale, MN, David (MaryAnn) Ekblad of New Brighton, Sandra Hanson and family, many cousins, nieces, nephews and their children.
A Celebration of Life for Don will be held on November 12, 2025, from 11:30AM to 1:30PM at the Mille Lacs Funeral Chapel. Friends, family, and all who knew him are encouraged to come together to share stories and honor the remarkable life of a man who genuinely made a difference in many lives.
Donald will be dearly missed, but his legacy of kindness and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
