Charles Walton Obituary

WALTON, CHARLES

Dr. Charles Anthony Walton was born on 3 April, 1926, and passed away on 31 July, 2014, in Titus, Alabama. He is survived by his beloved wife Joyce, and sons, Charles A. Walton Jr. And Kendall M. Walton.

Dr. Walton was a graduate of Tallassee High School where he held many offices. He entered the Navy where his duties included being a sonar operator on the SC-1033 sub chaser in the Pacific region during World War II. Walton received his B.S. Degree in pharmacy from Auburn in 1949, and his Ph.D in pharmacology from Purdue University in 1956. Later, he joined the University of Kentucky where he spent 22 years. While at UofK, received a Fulbright fellowship to the University of Cairo, Egypt where he taught for one year. Of his many accomplishments while he was at UofK, was his implementation of the nations first poison information center, and furthering the establishment of the Clinical Pharmacists programs.

During his 42 year career, Dr. Walton received numerous teaching and service awards including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy's distinguished teaching award in 1987, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy service award in 1984, and the ACCP Paul Parker Medal for outstanding contributions to the advancement of clinical pharmacy as an academic and health professional in 2006. He was one of the founding fathers of the ACCP.

Dr. Walton also enjoyed a long career in the United States Army Reserve, retiring as a Colonel of Field Artillery. He served on active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.

In addition to his outstanding academic career, Dr. Walton will always be known for his excellent story telling skills and his tremendous humor. He gave numerous talks throughout the country mixing intellectual expertise with laughter. Dr. Walton, was known as the "Mark Twain' of pharmacy education.

So sorry for our loss. Freddie, Lane and I enjoyed so much visiting with both of you. Lane enjoyed discussions with Dr. Charles and would say how much he admired how much he had accomplished. My prayers are with you.
