1926 - 2023

Van Wie Betty Jones Van Wie of Midland, Texas passed after a long and full life on February 4, 2023 at the age of 96. Betty was born on March 12, 1926 in Holland, Texas to Loraine and Ralph Jones. After losing her father, her mother moved Betty and her two sisters, Dottie and Melba, to Belton, Texas and raised them on her own during the depression. The three girls worked in an ice cream parlor to help their mother through the difficult times and learned to be very strong, independent women. After graduating Belton High School in 1943, she moved to Fort Worth and began her lifelong banking career at Continental National Bank. Shortly after, Betty met the love of her life, Joseph Van Wie. On February 24, 1951 they were the first couple to marry in the chapel on UT Austin campus and were married over 68 years. Over the following five years Joe and Betty welcomed their three beautiful daughters - Jerre, Sherre and Patti - and relocated to Andrews. While there, she was able to give her time as a Girl Scout Leader, Community Fund Raiser and Sunday School Teacher. Joe's career then took them to Fort Worth and Bay City where they retired. In 2004 Joe and Betty moved to Midland to be closer to family. In 2017 they moved out to the Helen Greathouse Center in the Manor Park Community. Betty is survived by her 3 daughters, Jerre Hutson of Dallas, Sherre and her husband Leon Gentry from Horseshoe Bay, TX and Patti and her husband Mike Mayer of Midland, TX. She was especially proud of her 6 grandchildren Mark Hutson (Terese), Tracy Hutson, Jill Collins (Keith), Jennifer Cummings (Justin), Michelle Hofer (Steven) and Meghan Cotton (Christian) and her 15 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all the ladies at Manor Park, Helen Greathouse Center who tirelessly took such great care of her, we truly appreciate time and love you showed her. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm in the chapel First Baptist Church in Midland with Dr. Darin Wood presiding on February 10, 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to Manor Park, First Baptist Church Midland or the charity of your choice.
