Charles R. Strain
Roodhouse - Charles R. Strain, affectionally known as "Chicken," 74, of Roodhouse passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025 at his home. He was born in Jacksonville the son of John H. and Gladys Sprague Strain. Charles married Lisa Strain Bommarito in 1988 and they shared two children.
He is survived by his children, Mark (Barbi) Strain of White Hall and Allison Gwartney of Roodhouse; his grandchildren, Keatyn, Olivia and Beau Gwartney and Roman Strain; his sister, Ann Sopko of Jacksonville; his brother, John E. Strain of Murrayville; and nieces and nephews, Terrie Day, Tim (Anna) Barker, John K. (Tony) Strain, Tracy Strain and Stephanie (Chris) Crabtree and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Charlie enjoyed spending time with his special companion, Kim Smith.
Charlie graduated from North Greene High School in 1969 and attended Robert Morris College. Upon returning he joined the family business, Roodhouse Envelope Company (RECO), where he served as Vice President until its closure.
Charlie was an avid sports fan, likely in part from his success on many high school teams. He enjoyed watching and attending sporting events ranging for his grandchildren's events (always on the front row) to professional events. He was a proud St. Louis Rams Season Ticket Holder during their Super Bowl run. He was a 40-year member of the American Bowling Congress. He played on local golf leagues, basketball leagues and softball leagues.
Charlie was an easy-going, loyal, kind and humble. He was a good man who enjoyed the simple things of life. He enjoyed fast boats, cars and motorcycles. He was a very charitable handyman, providing fix-ups for family and friends. Charlie was proud of his children and grandchildren. He wore the title Papa Charlie with pride. He loved taking the grandchildren on golf cart rides and swimming in the pool. He enjoyed trips to the family cabin in Minnesota.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. The family will meet friends from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the North Greene Athletic Fund. Condolences may be left online at
