Edwin Varble Obituary

Edwin Lee Varble, 74, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

He was born July 18, 1939, in St. Louis, the son of Maurice Strode and Vera F. Williams Varble. He married Martha Allinson Thomason on June 4, 1961, in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by three children, Daniel Lee Varble (wife, Julia) of Henrietta, N.Y., Allinson Lee Hermes (husband, John) of rural Alexander, and Steven Lee Varble of rural Chapin; and six grandchildren, Andrew Varble of New York, N.Y., Nicole Varble and Jamie Varble, both of Buffalo, N.Y., Laura Varble Nell (husband, Justin) of East Berlin, Pa., and Samuel Hermes and Matthew Hermes, both of Alexander. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ed was a 1957 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a 1961 graduate of Illinois College. He served as a chemist for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 32 years. In addition, he farmed in Morgan County and was a licensed real estate broker.

Ed was a dedicated member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Harmony Lodge 3 AF & AM, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, and Ansar Shrine. With a passion for flying and aircraft, Ed was a private pilot and held memberships in the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was a former volunteer in Scouting, serving as a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 107 and a leader for troop trips.

Ed was a devoted golfer for many years and enjoyed travel experiences, especially roller coasters, and annual trips to the Caribbean. He loved to rebuild automobiles and ride his motorcycle in his spare time.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with burial at Liberty Cemetery, west of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Memorial gifts are suggested to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church or Shriner's Hospital for Children.
