Robert Priest Obituary

Robert W. Priest, 88, of Bluffs, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, in New Salem.

He was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Winchester, the son of Otto and Mary McLaughlin Priest. He married Imogene Newberry in 1941. She preceded him in death March 23, 1983.

Surviving is one son, Gary W. (Judy) Priest of Elberfeld, Ind.; two grandchildren, Darsy (Joe) Smith of Meredosia and Tammy (Robin) Berry of Bluffs; four great-grandchildren, Christian (Alicia) Barnett of San Antonio, Kaleb (Sabrina) Barnett and Cainan Barnett, both of Springfield and Kayla (Roger) Luckett of Oak Park; three great-great-grandchildren, Karah, Mathew and Saith Barnett; 25-year companion, Carolyn Lawber of New Salem; companion's children, Chuck (ex-wife, Paula of Knob Noster, Mo.) Lawber of Sedalia, Mo., and Lorrie Cuartas of Perryville, Mo.; companion's grandchildren, Logan Lawber and Lakin (Cole) Miller, both of Knob Noster, Mo., and Malea Cuartas and Quinn Burns, both of Perryville, Mo.; and companion's great-granddaughter, Kylie Miller of Knob Noster, Mo. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Drake; and two brothers, Mach and Charles Priest.

Mr. Priest was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Bluffs until it closed. He then became a member of the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Winchester. He was a veteran having served in the Navy, Marines and Army in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Robert was employed as a warehouse supervisor for National Starch in Meredosia until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Bluffs American Legion. He was an avid golfer and gardener. He was known as a gentleman farmer working on Carolyn's farmstead.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mark's Church in Winchester. Visitation will be Monday after 2 p.m. with the family meeting friends from 4-8 p.m. at the Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs. Interment will be in the St. Mark's Cemetery in Winchester. Memorials are suggested to the Pike County Hospice. Condolences may be left online at www.mackeydaws.com.
