Windell McCrackin
June 17, 1929 - December 22, 2020
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - Earl Windell McCrackin, 91, of Myrtle Beach, passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Born in Floyds Township of Horry County, he was the youngest son of the late John Mayo McCrackin and Donnie Bell Small. He was predeceased by five brothers and one sister and he is survived by his wife, Johann Mishoe McCrackin.
Windell graduated from Floyds High School in 1946 and enrolled in the Marine Corps. After two years he attended Wofford College from 1948 to 1951, where he enrolled in Army ROTC. Upon graduation in 1951, he was commissioned and served two years in Korea in the 160th Infantry Regiment.
He enrolled in Law School at the University of South Carolina in the fall of 1953, where he became a member of Wig and Robe, Phi Delta Phi, and editor of the SC Law Quarterly in 1955. Upon graduation in 1955, he was employed by the U.S. Attorney General's Honor Recruitment Program to work in the Criminal Division of the Justice Department in Washington. In 1956 he returned to South Carolina to clerk for Federal Judge Ashton Williams in Charleston.
He moved to Myrtle Beach in the summer of 1957 to become a partner in the law firm of Urner, Farlow and McCrackin. He later became a founding member of the law firm of McCrackin, Barnett, and Richardson, from which he retired in 2017 after 62 years of law practice. He was active in the American Bar Association, the S.C. Bar, and the Horry County Bar. At different times he served as city attorney for the beach municipalities of North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, and Myrtle Beach. He served two terms in the S.C. House of Representative from 1960 to 1964.
He was an active member and a former elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a member of
the Myrtle Beach Civitan Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, American Legion Post 40, Post M of the Travelers' Protective Association and a 33rd degree Shriner.
Apart from the practice of law, his favorite activities were gardening and fishing.
Windell is survived by his wife Johann, three children Sidney, Mary Ann, and James, and five grandchildren, Rylie, Jayme, Mitchell, Katherine, and A.J.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, a memorial register book will be available to sign at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572. Further details regarding a formal memorial service and Veteran's Honors will be announced when available.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, 3810 Robert M. Grissom Parkway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
