Alice (Harman) LeBel

Alice (Harman) LeBel, 92, of Newington, widow of Everett M. LeBel, died on Monday, September 22, 2014. Born and raised in New York City, the daughter of the late Harry and Doris (Spier) Harman, Alice graduated from the Lincoln School and earned a Bachelor of the Arts Degree from Swarthmore College, Class of 1943. After graduation, she worked in Washington, D.C. During these war years, Alice began to correspond with the son of one of her mother's co-workers who was serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. The correspondence eventually led to a courtship and Alice Harman and Everett LeBel married in 1945. They resided in Nashua, NH for several years before coming to Connecticut eventually making Newington their home in 1957. They were blessed with four children. Alice was a Cub Scout den mother and became involved in her community. She was active with the League of Women Voters, serving as president of the Newington League, and attended the National Convention in Chicago in 1966. In Newington, Alice served on the Charter Commission of 1961-62 and served on the Board of Directors of the Lucy Robbins Welles Library for many years. During the 1970's, she worked part-time with the Service Bureau for Women's Organizations founded by Beatrice Fox Auerbach and later with B. Dalton Booksellers in Hartford. She was a longtime active member of the Unitarian Society of Hartford. She was predeceased by her husband Everett and her son, Harry H. LeBel. Alice is survived by two sons, Jonathan P. LeBel and Lawrence LeBel, both of Newington; her daughter Deborah J. LeBel, son-in-law Stanley E. Fogleman and grandson Michael Fogleman, all of Hingham, MA; and her many Spier cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Unitarian Society of Hartford, 50 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Friends of The Lucy Robbins Welles Library, the Swarthmore College Scholarship Fund or VNA Healthcare of Hartford.
