It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Andres Gilberto Velazquez, Sr., who entered eternal rest on May 28, 2025, at the age of 94 at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, CA.
Andres was born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas Mexico, on February 4, 1931. At age 18, he moved to Chicago in search of opportunity and a better life. It was there he met his beloved wife, Theresa. The two were married on April 29, 1951, beginning a lifelong journey rooted in love, family, and faith.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was part of the Engineer Division and worked in the machine shop on the Air Force base. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and was awarded the National Defense Service and Good Conduct medals. After his service, Andres built a long and successful career as a mechanic and welder-respected for his skill and admired for his work ethic.
Andres loved pier fishing, tending to his plants, and watching John Wayne Westerns. His homemade salsa and perfectly barbecued meats were family favorites, and his easy laughter and warm smile could light up any room.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, and is survived by his children Gloria, Diana, Andres Jr., Maria, and Daniel, as well as 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Andres once said about his own funeral that he "just wants everyone to be together after he closes his eyes." We honor his wish by gathering to celebrate a life well-lived and a man deeply loved.
