We could use any of the following descriptions for Bernie, actuary, mechanic, woodworker, or sailor, he was a true Jack of all trades. What was most impressive about Bernie, he was always there to help if you needed it. Bernie and Bea raised a great family and he was very proud of his children. Our sincere condolences. When a student is ready, a teacher comes.
I met Bernie in 1989 when I bought a Hobie 17 and first came to the Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club. Bernie was a founding member of the Club and he taught me how to sail and race, and also how to maintain and improve the boat. Bernie was a man of exceptional intelligence and was happy to share his experience and expertise in a gentle manner.
I spent time with Bernie on the beach, in practice drills, on race committee boats and while racing. He made me comfortable with sailing and I was able to progress to bigger boats and even a bit of single hand sailing offshore. I continue to sail both Hobie Cats and larger boats today.
I know that Bernie helped many people in addition to me, and I will always be grateful for the time and knowledge he shared with me, and I will miss him very much.
