Clarence Roland Hames Jr., known to many as "CR," was born in February 1948 to the late Clarence Roland Hames (CR) Sr. and Palma Mae Morrow Hames. CR passed away on August 6th 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He served in the United States Army as a cable systems installer and later worked for many years at BellSouth until he retired.
CR was a talented and practical man with a wide range of skills. He enjoyed restoring vintage vehicles, from VW dune buggies to a 1940 Ford. He was also a dirt track race car driver, a recreational pilot and an experienced parachutist- with over 1,500 jumps. His interests included motorcycles, honeybees, vintage cars, camping, fishing and fly fishing, and shooting guns.
He was dependable, hands-on, and always willing to help those around him. CR lived life to the fullest and sometimes seemed "bigger than life" to those who knew him the most. His last days were spent surrounded by family and friends. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had some amazing friends whom he spent countless hours with at his shop, home, traveling and at the airport.
Survivors include his children: Jessica Hames Butler (Travis) of Mooresboro and Missy Johnson (Jay) of Rutherfordton; and his grandchildren: Caleb (Margaret) and Cara Johnson, Carolyne, Chloey, and Cathan Butler. Great grandchildren include Josie and Charley Johnson.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Rutherford County for taking excellent care of CR at home. They would also like to express their extreme appreciation to his special caregivers Jeannie Holbert, Cheryl Boone, and Twiana Humphries.
A receiving of friends will be held on Friday August 8th, 2025 from 5-7:00PM at Crowe's Mortuary. Online condolences may be shared at www.crowemortuary.com.
