Courtney George McFarlane was born on February 11, 1960, in Tower Hill, Kingston, Jamaica. He was the first born for Hazel McFarlane and a welcomed sibling to his father James McFarlane's older children. Courtney attended White Marl All Age School, after the family moved to St.Catherine and later Tivoli Comprehensive High School where he started to show a keen interest in fixing electronics. He would tinker around with the radio, television, and anything that he could place his hands on. As the eldest for his mom, he changed a lot of nappies and assisted with the meals. He was a good cook!
He joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force after High School and was highly respected in the community where he resided. In fact, his siblings including myself was known as Coutney's little brother/little sister. His friends affectionately called him "Skibbo." Courtney met Flo and through their union, they were blessed with baby girl Terry-Ann. Courtney wanted more for himself and his family so he decided to migrate to the United States. It was a sad day for us all because he was our pride and joy. Courtney's motto in life was, "Give a man a fish every day and he will starve, teach a man how to fish and he will never be hungry!" Very soon his siblings caught on and they too continue to live by this motto.
Before long, he was joined by Flo and 2 more bundles of joy who were later added to the union: Courtney Jr., affectionally called CJ, and Tiffany. Courtney's interest grew into other areas and he decided to relocate to Georgia where he started his own security (alarm) company. Courtney loved his kids. Everyone who knew Courtney knew that! He would talk your ears off about them and would drive miles back and forth to connect with them in Ft. Lauderdale whenever he could regardless of the obstacles he would face at times which he candidly shared. Likewise, when his mom got sick he drove/flew down to Ft. Lauderdale every chance he got. He became very involved in the community through the NAACP, Charity events, the Caribbean American Advancement Foundation, and he also started to show a keen interest in radio broadcasting which he did on a local channel in Georgia. A few years ago he built over 100 computers and donated them to several schools in the island of Jamaica.
Before he got sick, he was seeking funds and partners to further his community involvement. Nothing and nobody could come between Courtney and his love for the community. It became his life. Woven into the fabric of his entire being was his love for Jesus Christ. He grew up in the church, got baptized, and never walked away despite his many challenges. Courtney was very charismatic and would light up a room as soon as he walked in but remained very humble and respectful. Sadly, on August 5th, 2024 he passed away due to complications from a stroke.
Courtney is survived by his three children: Terry Ann, CJ, and Tiffany. Two grandchildren. Sisters: Maxine, Melrose, Georgia, Annie, and Darling. Brothers: Patrick, Paul, Peter, Feddie, and Dowel. Countless nieces and nephews, childhood friends, and friends who he made on his journey.
