Dorothea (Dot) Hooper passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothea was born in North Plainfield, New Jersey, the beloved daughter of Mae (Gilmartin) and Frank Lyne Hooper.
Dot was educated in New Jersey schools receiving both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History and Geography from Montclair State University. She was certified to teach elementary and high school. Advanced courses gave her certification in supervision and administration.
Her career included teaching in both elementary and high school and advancing to a teacher-leader and chair position. She finally took the position of district coordinator for the Union County District #1 which included supervising teachers in four senior high schools serving six communities.
When Dot moved to Dover, New Hampshire she became an adjunct instructor at Franklin Pierce, New England, and New Hampshire colleges. She retired from Southern New Hampshire University where she had taught History, Geography, Government, and Politics, Humanities, and Western Civilization.
Always informing students that travel was the best form of education, Dot visited twenty-five foreign nations bringing back experiences and encouraging students to explore the world outside their hometown.
As a politics and government teacher, Dot decided to get real experience in both and service for her community at the same time. She served eight years on the Dover School Board, six on the City Council, and four as a State Representative.
Retiring from politics, Dot found other ways to serve the community. She volunteered at the Woodman Institute, the Strafford County Jail Family Reception Center, Hyder Hospice House, and serviced on various committees at First Parish Church. Dot also served on the boards of CAP and SEED.
Dot is survived by her nieces, Lynn Allen and husband Paul, Terry Ellen Carter and husband Kirk, and Lorraine Johnson and husband Martin Warren; grand-nieces Elizabeth, Rebecca, Emily, Hannah, Alecia, and Michelle; grand-nephew, Christopher; and also 7 great-grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Virginia Johnson and her nephew Eric Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at First Parish Church at 11 AM on Monday, January 15, 2024, 218 Central Ave, Dover, NH 03820.
Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
