Douglas Henderson DEWAR Obituary

Published by Comox Valley Echo on Dec. 16, 2011.

October 05, 1953 ~ November 30, 2011

Our dear Douglas closed his eyes and crossed over the bar after a valiant struggle with his broken heart.

Dew had recently remarked how he had been very lucky in his life: there was love, adventure, lots of laughs and so many good friends.

He was marine Captain who towed up and down the Island, a mining engineer in Hedley and art gallery owner in Tofino. His face lit up every time he told the story of "Asleep at the wheel". He loved to sing…as Wayne only knows. He loved music - The Odds being his favourite band. He was a true genius at camping. His favourite smell was of the hot moss on the rocks in Desolation Sound. "Standing and looking" at his piece of the rock was one of his favourite pass times.

He leaves behind to hold fast his memory: very good friend Steve Martin, his dog Marty, Mare', brothers Ian, Robert and Peter, sister Kelly, parents Douglas & Loo, so many, many friends.

I already miss you

A celebration of his life will be held at his property on January 21 at 2pm. Please call Mare for more info 250-522-0150.

Lost track of Doug after our teen years, but always remember the fun and adventure he added to our neighbourhood.
Great to see that he continued that approach, and that he enjoyed a fulfilling life.
Best resgards to Ian and Peter.

Many of my most memorable and exciting times here on the West Coast were spent in the colourful - jovial and entertaining special adventures with The
Captain ( DOUGGER ) as I called him. When the winds were absolutely A-Howlin'there was only one guy I could count on to endure the rigours of a true sailing challenge aboard TREKKER.Our main safety floatation was a bottle of rum, which naturally we had to empty first in order to float better. The Old RV Trip to Quadra Island, where I learned to wash down My meds with beer and enjoy a Batchelors cook-up. A batch of this with a batch of that - stir well, close your eyes and gulp. Dougger was most: down - to -earth and greatly admired Doug Snr. and Lou.We've lost a Real Character !

You were a light in the world
And the world gave you light
I saw the light in your eyes
And now i am sending
you this light.
And forever will shine by your side

I am so very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Doug and having him spend time with us in our employment program: Job Options BC this past year. Doug was value-added to our group-bringing with him lots of experience and stories. He loved to talk to us about his time running the art gallery. He also made a point of knowing what was going on with everyone around him, interested in others travel plans and future work ventures.
In sympathy,
