ELSIE MAE'S JOURNEY
On Saturday, January 6, 2024, the Almighty God in His Infinite Wisdom, gently closed the eyes of Elsie Mae Gunby Waters. Affectionately known as Mae, Mom, Auntie, Dush, Ms. Gunby and Cuz, she was born on March 31, 1938 to the late Moses Edward Gunby, Sr. and Elsie Lillian Fisher Gunby in Pocomoke City, Maryland.
Elsie was educated in the public school system, attending Stephen Long Elementary and graduating from Worcester High, Class of 1956. She then continued her quest for learning by attending Chesapeake College and obtaining accreditation in Early Education.
At an early age, Elsie was a domestic worker and later in life was employed by SHORE UP! Inc. There she served as a loving teacher for thirty (30) years with the HeadStart Program, eventually retiring from the Stockton, MD location in 1997.
Elsie eventually met the love of her life, the late Gentry H. Waters, Jr. They joined in holy matrimony on September 6, 1986, and served as devout members of the St. John AME Church in Pocomoke City, MD. Although there were no children from this union, they held a special bond with two God Daughters, Denise Coston of Snow Hill, MD, and LaTia Stoudmire of Pocomoke City, MD.
Elsie was an avid reader. She loved to write poetry and often documented her family history. In her later years, she found a passion for Word Search puzzles. If not with pen in hand, she stayed on the telephone with a host of close friends and family.
Mae leaves to cherish her loving memories: Sister, Mabel Matthews of Pocomoke, MD; Sisters-in-law, Mamie Gumby Pocomoke, MD, Novella Waters Dunlap of Capitol Heights, MD, and Kadovia Waters of Temperanceville, VA; Brothers-in-law, Robert Waters (Josephine) of Salisbury, MD, Anthony Waters of Pocomoke, MD and Ronald Waters of Glen Burnie, MD; Nieces, Gloria (Lindsay, Sr.), Cynthia, Orlean, Crystal, Vicky, Sandra (Thomas), Marlyn, Suzette (Harvey), Sarah and Anita; Nephews, Craig, Sr., Samuel, Jr., Keith, Terry, Vaughn, Darrell, William, and Alexander; Special Great Nephews, Deontrae, Sr., Tyler and Stewart, Jr. and a host of Great, Great-Great, and Great-Great-Great Nieces and Nephews along with other family and friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by: both parents; her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law; brothers, Theodore, Sr., Edward and Samuel Lee, Sr. Gumby; brother-in-law, Hampton Matthews; sisters-in-law, Marcelline Gumby and Eula Mae Cherry and Beloved Nephews, Johnny Taylor, Theodore, Jr., Jerome Gumby and Montez Brittingham.
