Eva passed away peacefully at home in Giddings on the morning of Tuesday, November 1, 2022 with her family by her side.
Eva Flores Cantu was born on December 20, 1937 at home in Ricardo, Texas to the parents of Jose Flores and Mercedes (Marroquin) Flores. Eva was the 5th oldest of 12 children, having 7 sisters and 4 brothers. Growing up she helped with picking cotton in the fields of Ricardo and El Campo, helping with the family expenses, and raising her siblings. She had strong ties with her church family at St Martin's Catholic Church in Kingsville, Texas. There she sang in the choir, taught CCD, and joined the Catholic Daughters of America. She taught her siblings the importance of faith through prayer and was always there for her family through anything with her loving support.
She came from a musical family where she grew to love music. She loved singing with her brothers, Mago and Macario Flores, while they played their instruments. On the weekends, you would find her with her sisters and friends either at the beach, movies, or going to dances, singing all the way there and back. Eva, with her older sisters, would drive her other siblings everywhere they went.
In 1962, Eva was introduced to Freddie Cantu, in which they were long time pen pals before marrying at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stafford, Texas on December 18, 1965. They went on to settle in El Campo, Texas and had their 4 children, Gloria, Adrian, Grace, and Maggie. A job opportunity took their family to Giddings, Texas in 1973. There, Eva took on part time work cleaning houses and working at a local grocery store to make ends meet. Her family became parishioners of St. Margaret Catholic Church where she taught CCD classes, became an Altar Society Member, and supported church events. Eva was truly her children's biggest fan. She was part of the band booster club, room parent, in the stands rooting the Buffaloes, or watching her kids perform in the band. She enriched the lives of many young girls as a Girl Scout leader and gave countless volunteer hours to support her children. As her children left home, she loved watching her sports, she could tell you the name of players and was consumed watching her favorite teams.
Eva is preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Mercedes Flores; parents-in-law, Manuel and Carmen Cantu; son, Adrian Cantu; brother, Martin and sister-in-law Belia Flores; brother, Manuel Flores; sister, Linda and brother-in-law Reynaldo Cantu; sister, Ernestina and brother-in-law Raul Gomez; sister and brother-in-law, Ernestine and Antonio Gonzales; sister-in-law, Elosia Cantu, and brothers-in-law, Robert Figueroa, Frank Cantu, Gilbert Cantu, Manuel Cantu Jr., Juan Gonzales, and Robert Ratcliff.
Eva is survived by her husband, Freddie Cantu of Giddings; children and their spouses, Gloria and Ricky Wade of Burleson, Grace Cantu and Marlon Goodloe of Giddings, and Maggie and Johnny Wilds of Tennessee; grandchildren, Maddie Wilds of Tennessee, Jalon Goodloe of Giddings, Alaina Goodloe of Giddings, Makayla Goodloe of Georgia, Lanie Corinez of Abilene, Brittany and Michael Engel of New York, Danielle and Nicholas Oliver of Burleson, and J.P. and Lindy Wilds of Tennessee; great grandchildren, Mia Oliver of Burleson, Diem Oliver of Burleson, and August Hays of Georgia; siblings, Lena Ortega of Fresno, Elisa Figueroa of Bishop, Vangie Flores of Needville, Macario and Rachel Flores of Ricardo, Eliene and Santiago Revilla of Missouri City, Mago and Teresa Flores of Stafford, and Vera and Ruben Guerrero of Sugarland; sisters-in-law, Lupe Flores of Warton and Eva Cantu-Morales of Markham, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Throughout Eva's life, she loved celebrating birthdays, she made a point of sending a card, a call, baking a cake, anything to commemorate the day a loved one was born. She would say it was important to celebrate their special day. Eva, today we celebrate you and your new life of walking with our Lord.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Hospice Brazos Valley, or to St. Margaret Catholic Church.
