James Gordon Cockill Sr.

James Gordon Cockill, Sr., of Spartanburg, SC, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2023 at his home.
Born in Welch, WV, he was a son of the late James Cockill and Myra Ross Cockill. Upon graduation from Welch High school, he joined the US Navy, where he proudly served his country for four years. After leaving the Navy, he returned to Welch and began his career working in business and finance. Later on, he attended Erskin College and became an ordained Presbyterian minister, serving many churches across the southeast.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Mildred Virginia Meade Cockill and his four daughters; twelve-year-old, Deborah Ann Cockill and infant triplets; Mary Kaye, Deborah Gaye and Alice Faye Cockill.
Left to cherish Gordon's memory is his son, James "Jimmy" G. Cockill, Jr.; grandson, James G. Cockill, III; nieces, Donna Edwards and Laura Stinnett and nephew, David Stinnett.
Gordon was a member of Skylyn Presbyterian Church, where he selflessly served in many capacities. He loved his church and was always willing to step in where needed. Gordon was an avid reader, an artist and enjoyed building model airplanes and ships. He loved spending time with his family, his friends and his dog, Fritz.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Absolute Care and Gentiva Hospice for caring for Gordon during his last illness.
A Memorial service to honor Gordon, will be held at Skylyn Drive Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
