James T. "Smitty" Smith, age 71, of Wilmington, DE passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Jimmy was born on October 26, 1951 to the late Thomas and Marguerite Smith. He graduated from Salesianum in 1969.

Jimmy was employed at Amtrak as a maintenance mechanic for 36 years where he made many lifetime friends.

Jimmy enjoyed retirement. He was an outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, boating and flying small aircraft. He enjoyed wildlife, going to the beach, Phillies games and spending time with his family and friends. Jimmy loved music; he played a variety of instruments. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles. Most of all, Jimmy delighted in watching his grandchildren compete in various youth sporting activities.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife Joanne (Voly) Smith with whom he had shared 24 wonderful years; sons Adam and wife Gloria of Elkton and James J. of Wilmington; grandchildren Nathan and Natalie Smith; brothers Jon Smith (Penny) of Bear and Jeff Smith (Renee) of Wilmington; three sisters Joellen Strickler (Jim), Judy Baker, and Jackie Ascione (Tony) of Elkton; sister-in-law Debbie Carter (Allen) of Longs, SC; and brother-in-law Joseph Voly (Gail) of Dagsboro; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jimmy was predeceased by his brother-in-law Jim Baker.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 10 am at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 with a memorial service at 11 am. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jimmy's name to a charity of your choice.
