Weslaco- Jesse Villarreal of Weslaco, TX passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Jesse was a dedicated and hard-working individual who made numerous accomplishments in his life.
Born on August 17, 1947, in Mercedes, Texas, Jesse excelled in football, basketball, track, and baseball at Mercedes High School and was named all-district in all four. Upon graduation from Mercedes High School, he attended and played running back at New Mexico Highlands University and completed his Bachelors in Art at the University of Texas Pan American.
Jesse served in the Texas Army National Guard and achieved the rank of Sgt. He worked for many years at Hidalgo County Department of Community Affairs, where he was the first ever Executive Director of the JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act) for Hidalgo County. Later, he would work and retire from Weslaco ISD as a parent specialist conducting outreach programs for local and migrant students and parents. Jesse also served many years on the board of trustees of South Texas College, representing the Mid-Valley. Jesse was also very involved with the lions club for many years and was very active in politics. He was always finding ways to serve the Hidalgo County community. His passion was helping those that were less fortunate remembering how many members of the city of Mercedes helped him growing up. This was the catalyst that allowed him to remain humble and live a life of selfless service.
Jesse was a loving father and husband who married the love of his life, Gladys Villarreal, and celebrated 52 years of marriage. Always joking around and being a great teacher to his sons, Jesse was a great example of what a father should be. His fondest memory of his family was fishing at midnight on the pier on South Padre Island, listening to the classic songs by Elvis Presley and other Solid Gold Hits. He was very artistic and creative and would spend countless hours creating yard art, paintings, and his beloved bird houses. You could find him in his shed painting beautiful art or under the drive way making bird houses.
Jesse was always there for those who asked for help and was especially proud of his sons and their accomplishments in their careers and families.
Jesse is survived by his wife, Gladys Villarreal; sons, Kristoffer (Leticia) Villarreal, Jason (Claudia) Villarreal, and Corey (Idalia) Villarreal; grandsons, Anthony, Vincent, Easton, Xavier and Adan; granddaughters, Ashley, Gabby, Karina, Anika, and Cheyenne, and one brother Alberto (Lene) Villarreal and numerous Brother and sister-in-laws, nephews and nieces, from both sids of the family.
Jesse was preceded in death by his mother; father; sisters; and one brother.

I'll always remember his wanting his boys to be happy, and financially secure. Always telling them to take care of themselves and asking if the needed anything just to let him know. He loved the so much. MOM

Dad, I will always remember your laugh and how sharp you used to dress, it bothers me how quickly we lost you and how quickly the service was over and done with even though we were not ready to say goodbye.
I miss you and would have liked to hear your voice wishing me happy Veterans Day and with the holidays coming up it will be hard to enjoy without you here. I love you Dad and am grateful that we ended every call with an I love you. I also cherish the phone message you left so I will never forget your voice. Can't believe you are gone, such a big void for us especially Mom as she is alone now. I kept hoping you would come to visit more often, but you never got the chance Vincent mentioned to me the other day how he wished he could have seen you more cheerful and laughing, but you were sick, angry, and in your head thinking of how long you had left on this wasteland earth.
your always in my thoughts Dad.
Love your eldest son,
Kristoffer

I am so saddened to hear the news of the passing of my good friend, Jesse Villareal. I first met him at West Elementary School in Mercedes, probably in the 1st grade. He was so much taller than I but he was no bully. In fact, he was just the opposite, very friendly and willing to help the smaller kids, like myself. We played softball on the school grounds those years and I was always happy when, as captain, he would choose me to be on his team. He was a natural leader from the very beginning and all the boys looked up to him. He was like the Fonzy before there was a Happy Days TV show. I even combed my hair like he did, straight back, no part for me anymore. He always had a smile on his face and it was a joy to be around him and to be considered his friend. But he was a tough competitor, just hated to lose. He pushed me to do my best and get better. At our reunions, he took time to say hello to me. He went on to have a very successful athletic career in football, baseball and basketball. I enjoyed playing with him on the baseball team our last two years of high school. My deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to his family. I will miss him but I will always remember him.

May he Rest In Paradise

We grew up in the same neighborhood with him when he was in high school.
I was just a kid but he seemed bigger than life and an athlete! He was always real nice to all us younger kids in the neighborhood. He definitely was a role model for me and am sure fire many.
My most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the entire family.
