Born on December 12, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA, to Theodore Frederick and Agnes (Gerner) Frederick Egan. Graduating from Camden Catholic High School in 1954. Joan then worked as a telephone operator in Pennsauken, NJ, while living with her loving Aunt and Uncle, Marie and Arthur Greilich and her grandmother, Mary (Scott) Gerner.
Joan met the love of her life, Don, a Navy man, on a blind date. In order to attend, Don hitched-hiked from Virginia to New Jersey. They married on January 21, 1956, in Maple Shade, NJ. Their 65-year-long love story was marked by continual acts of self-sacrifice and a beautiful legacy left to their loving children: Elizabeth (James) Baker of Marmora, NJ, Patricia (Jeff) Dowling of Marmora, NJ and Donald (Sherri) St. George of Nampa, ID, as well as 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Joan is also survived by sisters Evelyn (Frederick) Scanlon and Patricia (Egan) Emrick, brother Joseph Egan and a host of loving relatives and friends.
As a long-time resident of Woodbine, Joan was an employee of the Family Health and Prescription Center for over twenty years. She also served the Woodbine community alongside her husband in many volunteer capacities, including the Woodbine Ambulance Corps Auxiliary. In the early 1970's they owned and operated the Colorado Cafe' and Sportsman's Center and DeeJay's Variety Store where she worked while also raising three children.
As the wife of an adventurer, Joan enjoyed the many family camping trips, particularly the cross-country journeys to the mountains of Colorado in 1966 and 1967.
Joan was an avid reader of biographical novels and historical fiction and enjoyed word puzzles and TV game shows. More than anything else, her retirement years were enriched by being surrounded by the love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan (Mom-mom, Grandmom, G-G, Aunt Joan) will be remembered as kind, patient, caring and stronger than she may have appeared. Her humility and consistently sweet demeanor, along with her self-deprecating sense of humor charmed all who met her. In her later years, while there was uncertainty around her declining health, she was most confident in the heavenly home that awaited her.
Burial will be a private ceremony at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House, NJ. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a later date. Arrangements by and condolences at www.adams-perfect.com.
