He was the eldest of eleven siblings. He immigrated to the United States in 1984 during the Civil War of El Salvador. Once in the US, he worked as a farm worker in the San Juaquin Valley in California. He then moved to Kodiak, Alaska, in 1990 to work in fisheries, where he spent the next twenty-two years. Finally, Jose moved to Iowa in 2012 to join his children.
Jose's happiest moments in life were those he spent surrounded by his family. He would often hold cookouts and parties at his home to invite over thirty family members to celebrate being together. At these gatherings, you would find him grilling the meat, hosting, and ensuring everyone else ate before he made himself a plate. He loved his grand and great-grandchildren, often found holding all the babies at every party. He was humble and generous, offering any help he could, often putting others before himself. He was not a man of many words, but he had a way of making you feel loved. This would come in the actions of making sure his kitchen cupboards were filled with his grandchildren's favorite treats, watching cartoons with them, and deshelling beans. In the summer, he would plant vegetables and share his harvest with the family at the end of the season. His grandchildren remember him for his love of fishing and outdoor activities.
One of his daughter's favorite memories is of him riding his tall horses, wearing a sombrero being the most handsome man in town. Once you heard the horses' hooves coming down, his kids would run to find him getting off his horse wearing a cowboy hat, boots and with candies and sweet bread.
Jose Mauricio is the eldest son of Juan Jose Argueta and Maria Imelda Rodas. He was preceded in death by his grandpa Jose Tiburcio Rodas, grandmother mama Carmen Cuellar, his father, Juan Jose Argueta, and his nephew Jose Alex Mendez. He is also survived by his seven children, Marta, Julio, Consuelo, Guadalupe, Maria, Rafael, and Jose (Jr) Argueta.
