Memorial Services for Joy Jones will be Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Waldo Funeral Home at 1 p.m.
Joy Ann Smith Jones was born on May 4, 1940, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Ora and Elsie Smith. Her mother affectionately called her a "bundle of joy," a name that stuck with her throughout her life. Joy graduated from Chickasha High School in 1958 and later attended USAO, where she earned her degree in Home Economics.
In 1973, Joy married Clifford E. Jones, whom she met at a Marietta grocery store. Their wedding, hosted by the Love County Extension Homemakers, was a memorable event. They shared 46 years of marriage until Cliff's passing on November 16, 2019.
Joy dedicated three decades of service to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. She worked in Bryan County for 22 years and also served in Cimarron and Love counties, beginning her extension career in 1968. Throughout her tenure, Joy held various roles, including extension educator for family and consumer sciences, county home economist, and home economist/EFNEP. She provided leadership for 4-H and youth development programs and even served as interim county Extension Director, overseeing rural development and county fair activities.
Known for her caring and compassionate nature, Joy touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Her commitment to her work was recognized through multiple Distinguished Service Awards, "Oklahoma Extension Service Outstanding County Staff Awards," the "Young Family Challenge Award," and recognition for outstanding child care programs in the state.
In 1981, Joy and Cliff moved to Sherman, Texas, where they made lasting friendships. Joy also became involved in the Red Hat Society, enjoying its activities for several years. As their health declined, they cherished moments together-watching old movies and simply being in each other's company.
Joy spent her final years at Cedar Hollow Rehabilitation, where she passed away on May 18, 2024. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband and her mother, Elsie.
Joy is survived by her five nephews and nieces: Joe (Elizabeth) Smith, JeriLin (Robert) Jackson, John (Dania) Smith, Jim (Jana) Smith, and Jacki (Rob) Boaz. The family expresses gratitude to the caring staff at Cedar Hollow and acknowledges special friends and caregivers: Marilynn Saunders, Teresa Vaught, Jackie Davis, and Veronica Ordonez Valdiveio.
May Joy's memory continue to bring comfort to her loved ones.
