Keiko Bahns, born on December 1, 1941, in Sapporo, Japan, was an extraordinary soul whose charisma touched the lives of many. As the youngest of four siblings, she faced the challenges of post-WWII Japan with resilience, attending night school to support her family during the day.
Graduating from Sapporo Minami High School in 1959, Kay pursued her passion for design at the professional dressmaking school of Sapporo. Infatuated with American culture, she immersed herself in the music of The Platters and reveled in the joy of Western-style dancing.
Kay's vibrant spirit illuminated her time as a tailor in Sapporo, where she spent evenings practicing English in coffee shops with friends. Described as the life of the party, bold, and uniquely beautiful by her Japanese companions, she transcended the norms of her time.
In 1966, love blossomed when Kay met Joe Bahns, a serendipitous encounter they fondly remembered. Their journey led to marriage, celebrated twice in Japan and once in the United States. In 1968, Kay embarked on a new chapter, moving to the US with Joe, where they built a loving home and welcomed three daughters: Michelle, Jennifer, and Theresa.
A devoted mother, Kay balanced motherhood with her passion for sewing, crafting Irish step dance costumes, tailored aprons for a local French bakery, and even her daughters' prom dresses. As her daughters grew, she seamlessly transitioned into an office manager role, captivating everyone with her magnetic personality and spunky humor.
Kay's love extended beyond family to her furry and feathered companions. A true animal enthusiast, she welcomed a delightful menagerie into her home, including cats, dogs, parakeets, ducks, turtles, frogs, fish, crayfish, and in her later years, she befriended neighborhood deer and wild turkeys.
In Joe's final years, Keiko became his devoted caregiver, showcasing her unwavering commitment and love. Known for her American-style Japanese cuisine, particularly her gyoza, pickled vegetables, and salads, she will be dearly missed for her culinary talents and storytelling prowess.
Keiko was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe Bahns, parents Tokuichiro and Shizue Nakamura, and siblings Tokumitsu, Mitsuko, and Kenichi. She is survived by her three adoring daughters, Michelle Bahns (Mike Aschenbrenner), Jennifer (Byron Nolen), and Theresa (Chris Ando); many Nieces & Nephews; and Sister-in-law Akie.
Our family would like to voice our deepest appreciation to Paz and Enden at Ambrosia Villa who took incredibly nurturing care of Kay in her last months.
In our hearts, Keiko's memory will forever shine-a small woman with an extraordinary personality, leaving an indelible mark on those privileged to know her. As she joins her beloved Joe, may they continue their eternal journey surrounded by the love of all the pets and people that enriched their lives.
A celebration of Kay's life will take place at a later time. Please check back for more details.
