Kim Tran O'Brien

On the evening of August 2, 2013, Kim, a long-time resident of Centreville, Virginia, passed away as a result of a stroke. She was surrounded by family at Fairfax Hospital at the time of her passing. Kim was born in Phat Diem, Vietnam in 1942 to parents Thu Ngoc Tran and Nguoi Thi Khac Nguyen. After her mother died in 1960 and her father died in 1963, Kim stepped in to raise her four younger siblings who ranged in age from 3 to 13. In 1975, she and her siblings dodged bullets while fleeing the country during the Vietnam war and were accepted by the United States as refugees. In 1991, Kim married her husband Walter. Kim was a devout Catholic and attended daily mass at St. Timothy's church in Chantilly. She was a great cook and took great pleasure in cooking special meals for her family, especially her famous roast duck. When she wasn't attending mass or cooking, she enjoyed gardening and watching the Global Catholic Network channel (EWTN). Kim is survived by her husband, Walter P. O'Brien; four siblings, Hai Tran of Centreville, VA, Helen Upton and husband Don of Melbourne, FL, Ann Koren of Centreville, VA, and Jacques (Phong) Tran and wife Charlotte of Medford, NJ; niece Katie Marfori and husband Carlo of Fairfax, VA; and nephews Tim Koren and wife Hollie of Arlington, VA, Bryan Upton of Melbourne, FL, Jimmy Tran of Fairfax, VA, Jesse Tran of Fairfax, VA.
