Lawrence Barker Obituary

Published by Armstrong Funeral Home - Mount Ayr on May 5, 2009.
Lawrence Edward Barker was born November 16, 1931 in Taylor County, Iowa to Lillian (Gauvreau) Barker and Raymond Barker. Lawrence went to several area schools. After getting out of school, he served his country in the US Army from 1953-1955, mainly in Germany. On December 8, 1953, he was married to Lila Tyrrel, daughter of N.V. & Vesta (Walters) Tyrrel of Mt. Ayr. To this union two sons were born; Rusty Lavernon and Lonny Lee. After his discharge from the Army, Lawrence worked for several area people including Knapp Construction, Phil Larson, Spurrier Oil Co. for 19 years, before working 23 years at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Methodist Church and American Legion. Lawrence was a very good husband and father. He always had time to shoot baskets and play hide-and-go-seek with the boys & neighbors. He loved gardening even when he had to sit in a chair to sow his seeds. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and especially liked to be with his family. He liked to tease & talk to people. Lawrence and Lila lived 41 years in Clearfield before moving to Lenox 9 years ago. Lawrence died of painful bone cancer on May 5, 2009 while a resident of Clearview Home in Clearfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Tori Barker; brother Pearl Barker; sister-in-law Julia Barker; and parents-in-law Nova & Veta Tyrrel. He is survived by his wife Lila Barker of Lenox; sons Rusty (Angie) Barker of Des Moines, IA and Lonny (Ronda) Barker of Casey, IA; granddaughter Elizabeth Barker; step-grandchildren Lindsey & Kailey; step-great grandchildren Drake & Saige; brothers Ivan Barker of Elwood, Kansas and Ralph (Luella) Barker of Charles City, Iowa; and a sister-in-law Anna Marie Barker.
