Martha Wells, 87, of Hickory passed away Friday, October 27th, 2023, at Carolina Caring.
Born November 7, 1935 in Hamilton Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Mary Gurley.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lenoir Rhyne College Professor, Dr. Charles Wells.
Martha worked in education her whole life as a teacher's aide at Oakwood Elementary School for over twenty years until her retirement. She was an extremely active member of Viewmont Baptist church where she sang in the choir and played handbells for many years. Martha was truly a good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. She held her chin high through all situations as her faith came from the Lord which gave her the gift of acceptance and joy in all things. She delighted in her grandchildren and loved sending them cards for every occasion. Martha was a generous, selfless, kind, and loving lady, ready to help any and all who needed her. She will be lovingly and deeply missed, especially for the beautiful smile which she shared with every person she met, on any occasion.
She is survived by her son, Shannon Wells and wife Keisha of Claremont, NC; daughter Heather Hylton and husband Scott of Claremont; sisters Ethel Vance of Kansas and Edith Tuazon and husband Oscar of Virginia; and grandchildren Marissa and Kole Wells, Kadance Hardee, Logan Wiggins, Jayden Bennett, Addison Morgan, and Caroline Morgan. Additionally, she is survived by her best friend and beloved chihuahua, Sonny (officially adopted by Marissa).
A celebration of life service will be held Monday, October 30th, 2023, 11:00 AM at Viewmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Andrew Rawls and the Rev. Chris Wells officiating. Inurnment will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00AM as well as after the service at the church.
