Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whiting's Funeral Home - Williamsburg on Jun. 25, 2024.
Maude Marie "Ree" Gray departed this earthly life on June 19, 2024, with her daughters by her side. She was born on June 28, 1952, to the late Florence Florine "Flo" Gray in
Williamsburg, VA.
Ree was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System. As a hardworking and independent woman, she worked several years as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Her career included employment at Eastern State Hospital, Pines Convalescent Home, and as a substitute teacher at Bruton Heights Elementary School. Later, she opened her own residential cleaning business, which she ran successfully for 34 years.
Known for her vibrant personality, Ree was the life of the party. She loved dancing and shopping for deals, especially for purses, shoes, and hats. Spending time with family and friends brought her great joy, as did watching her favorite shows: Have and Have Nots, Sistas, Housewives, and The Oval. To know Ree was to love her. She was a loyal daughter, mother, grandmother, Na Na, and friend. She will be deeply missed, but her family finds comfort in knowing she is reunited with her mother Flo, uncle James "Jimmy" Gray, and her granddaughter Chakayla Spurlock.
Ree is also predeceased by her sister Kathy Palmer Kendall.
She leaves to cherish a lifetime of love and precious memories with her loving and devoted daughters, Lisa Brown-Smith, Leslie Spurlock (Tanaka), and Latrelle Brown; loving grandchildren, Lamesha Walker, Gregory Walker Jr. (Crystal), Courtney Brown, Chakira Spurlock, Cynese Spurlock, Xavier Phillips, Ja'lynn Brown, and Kaiden Brown; precious great-granddaughters, Midori Walker, Aubrianna Brown, A'Mirra Lipscomb, Layla Walker, and A'Nyse Lipscomb; brothers, Joshua Palmer Jr., Lewis Bernard Palmer (Melissa), and James A. Palmer; sister Carolyn Pugh (Zephaniah); great-aunt Cora Jones; great-uncle Frank Gray Sr.; special cousin Mary Watkins; special friends, Yvonne, Robbie, Anna, Olivette, Clara, Vickie, Michaela, and Evelyn; several nieces, nephews, bonus children and grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Ree's lively spirit and boundless love have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be remembered with affection and gratitude by her family and friends.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Bethel Restoration Center. Immediately following the service, a horse drawn hearse procession to Cedar Grove Cemetery will take place. Ms. Gray may be viewed in the church on Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
