(Myrna) Ruth Jones, daughter of the late Ulysses S. and Margaret Grant, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 9, 2023 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Ruth was born in Akron, Ohio on March 29, 1933. She attended both elementary and secondary schools in Akron. Ruth continued her post-secondary education at The University of Akron, earning a B.S. in Education and at Arizona State University, earning a M.A. in Counseling and Guidance. Professionally, Ruth worked as an elementary school teacher (Akron, Ohio and Schenectady, N.Y.); a guidance counselor (Hayward, CA) and as an academic counselor (Chabot College, Hayward, CA). She retired from the Hayward Public Schools in 1992, but continued to work part time at Chabot College until she left her home of thirty-three years to live in the state of Georgia. There, she became a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Snellville. Ruth had loving memories of her church affiliations at Palma Ceia Baptist and South Bay Community churches in California. Apart from her family, ongoing Bible Study, especially through B.S.F., was the love of her life. She had a passion for Hymns and Songs of Faith and counted it a privilege to bring the gospel in song through The Celebration Choir and The Joyful Sounds at her church and through her participation in The Jubalheirs. She enjoyed the community singing groups of The Village Singers (San Lorenzo, CA) and The Gwinnett Choral Group (Lawrenceville, GA).Ruth was a faithful wife of 51 years to the late Dr. Alvin H. Jones, Jr.; cherished mother of Alvin H. III (Sacramento, CA), Deborah Kathleen and Rhett Preston (Lithonia, GA), and David Aaron (Colorado Springs, CO); grandmother of 5 and great-grandmother of 2. She leaves Special brothers Donald M. Jones (Grayson, GA), and Leon Jones (Akron, OH), Special Daughter Dionne Barron-Jones. Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Kevin Michael, earlier in 2023; and her brothers, Donald U. Grant, Andrew A. Grant and Alvin W. Grant. A host of family, friends, & loved ones. A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Tabernacle International Church, 270 Simonton Road SW, Lawrenceville, GA. Arrangements by Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Road SW, Lawrenceville, GA 30046. 770.962.3100. Please sign the online guest registry at www.stewartfh.com.
