Norman Hackerman, 95, having lived a long and productive life, died Saturday night at Scott and White Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was a native of Baltimore, and it was there, at Johns Hopkins University, that he met his wife Gene to whom he was married for 61 years. He was the father of four children, grandfather of fourteen and great-grandfather of five, respected scientist, educator and administrator of national reputation. He was a professor of chemistry for over 60 years and served as the President of the University of Texas at Austin, President of Rice University, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Robert A. Welch Foundation, and Chairman of the National Science Board. He is survived by his daughter Pat Berry, and husband Michael, son Steve Hackerman and wife Mary, daughter Sally Myers and husband Dennis, daughter, Katy Walker and husband Robert; his grandchildren, Wendy Rosenthal and husband Mike Swinney; Erin Ostboe and husband Chad, Michael Berry, Jennifer Matthesen and husband Steve, Chris Hackerman and wife Leigh Ann, Colby Hackerman, Clay Hackerman, Elizabeth Myers, Allison Myers, Katharine Daye and husband Travis, Jennifer Gaffney, Tyler Gaffney, Clayton Walker and Mason Walker, and great grandchildren Laraleigh and Lane Norman Hackerman, Avery Ostboe, Robert and Margaret Matthesen; and dear friend and companion, Dorothy Colvin. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe, Austin, a reception will follow the services at The UT Campus Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gene Hackerman Scholarship Fund at Rice University, c/o Paul Sutera, Rice University, 6100 Main Street, Mailstop 546, Houston, TX 77005.
