Richard Thearin
September 1, 1935 - October 31, 2025
Richard D. Thearin, age 90 of Spider Lake Township WI, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 31, 2025 in his home at Northland Lodge.
Richard David Thearin was born September 1, 1935 in Hinsdale IL, the son of Howard and Dorothea (Young) Thearin. Dick grew up between Chicago IL and Hayward WI as his parents moved between the cities to run the family resort, Northland Lodge. After graduating from high school, he earned a bachelor's degree in education and later a master's degree. In 1960, Dick married Patricia Bass and together they were blessed with two children, David and Dianna.
Dick's teaching career took him across the country from Wisconsin to New Mexico to Minnesota. No matter where his teaching travels took him, he returned to Hayward every summer to help run the family resort - never missing one summer!
On April 13, 1973 he married Ramona Lins in Minneapolis, and a few years later they joyfully welcomed their son, Rick, to the family. Shortly after, they made Hayward their year-round home. While running the resort, Dick volunteered with the Spider Lake Fire Department and local snowmobiling clubs and also served as president of the Quiet Lakes Tourism Association.
Dick was a proud Green Bay Packer and Wisconsin Badger fan. He loved hunting, fishing, playing guitar, singing with guests and traveling to tropical and international destinations. He will be remembered for his warm personality, sense of humor, love of nature and quick wit. In fact, his wallet was filled with hand written jokes! Dick was a hardworking man devoted to his family and the resort he cherished.
He is survived by his three children Dave (Peggy) Thearin of Hayward, Dianna Thearin of Fruita CO and Rick (Sarah) Thearin of Hayward; two grandchildren Rachael Thearin of Houston TX and Cole (Kristina) Thearin of Hayward; and three great-grandchildren Raelyn, Bjorn and Jonah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Ramona.
A funeral service celebrating Dick's life will be held at noon on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at the Hayward Funeral Home with Pastor Ryan Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the national chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries, an organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities enjoy the sport of fishing, something that was near to Dick's heart.
