Walter Lankenau Obituary

Walter Charles Lankenau

Fort Myers - Walter Charles Lankenau, 94, of Fort Myers, formerly of Weehawken, NJ, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021. He was born November 24, 1926 in West New York, New Jersey to John and Louise (Colburn) Lankenau. He is survived by Leona, his wife of 72 years and his son Walter Jr., as well as three nephews and three nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers John, Robert, and Alfred and his sister Katherine.

Walter worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and retired from Sun Bank in Naples. He attended Pace University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Walter's sense of adventure led him to enlist in the Navy at age 17 to serve in World War II. After raising a family, Walter and Leona traveled several times to Spain, Portugal, and Greece. Later, his love of the sea inspired them to cruise the Caribbean and to South America and Alaska.

After moving to Florida, golf became a passion which he pursued until just a few years ago. He also handcrafted several decorative lampshades made of seashells and old eyeglass lenses.

Walter pursued additional adventures after retirement, working on-call for FEMA, which took him to disaster sites throughout the United States. Walter and Leona also enjoyed doing volunteer work at Health Park for many years.

Walter had a quick wit and always enjoyed a good joke or play on words.

A memorial service will be held at Seven Lakes Golf and Tennis in November. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice.

So very sorry to hear of Walt's recent passing. He was a dedicated volunteer at HP and would occasionally stop by the Candlelighters office to say hello. My condolences to Leigh and family.
