Betty Wood Obituary

Betty Daniel Wood

Betty Daniel Wood of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at her home. She was the devoted and loving wife of the late Charles "Chuck" Irvin Wood for 66 years. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 18, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Felton and Bertha Deane Daniel.

Betty leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Jean Wood-Kobert (Stephen) and Cathy Wood Armes (George); three grandchildren, Katie Kobert, Christy Kobert, and Charlie Armes; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by one sister, Adna Daniel Fainter, and two brothers, Charles "Buck" Daniel (Judy) and Larry Daniel (Judith).

Early in her career, Betty worked at the Lynchburg National Bank and Trust Company in the Trust Department and later at Scott, Horner, and Mason in Lynchburg and Roanoke. After her daughters entered elementary school, she attended Central Virginia Community College and Lynchburg College to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1974 and a Master of Education degree in 1980.

Betty was employed by the Lynchburg City Schools for 21 years, teaching at Garland Rhodes Elementary and Sandusky Elementary Schools in kindergarten and second grade. Very loved by her students and their parents, she continued to receive cards, wedding invitations, gifts, and visits from them and their families until her last days. She saw the potential in every child and gently nurtured her students with respect and loving encouragement. The following quote by Henry B. Adams beautifully reflects Betty's legacy: "A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops."

Betty loved attending church and sang for many years in the choir of Euclid Christian Church. She also attended Quaker Memorial Presbyterian and Fort Hill United Methodist Churches.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, Centra Hospice, and Generation Solutions for the excellent and loving care provided for Betty.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Reverends Marc Brown of Fort Hill United Methodist Church and John Hemming of Culpeper United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the Fort Hill United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 106 Oakridge Blvd, Lynchburg, Va.

In lieu of flowers, please make any contributions in Betty's memory to the Centra Foundation, https://www.centrahealth.com/foundation/online-donation-form (designate location: Cancer Care or Hospice).

I taught with Betty at Sandusky and she taught both of my sons. She was a wonderful person and teacher. I never heard her say an unkind word. She made every child believe that they could succeed and they would rise to her expectations. Betty continued to keep up with her students and praise them on their accomplishments. She always made it seem like it was an honor for her to teach them when in reality, they were so blessed to have her. She was a wonderful, kind and considerate person who will be truly missed:

Our sympathy to the family at their loss. Our oldest daughter was in her class and our youngest would not go to school unless she had her also, she just loved her. Again we are so sorry for your loss.
