Charles Newcomb Obituary
Charles Jerry "Pete" Newcomb, 74, of Madison Heights, passed away Jan. 6, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Bryant Newcomb. Born May 1, 1935, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Claude Elder "Dick" Newcomb and Erma Raikes Newcomb.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Elder "C.E." Newcomb Jr.
Mr. Newcomb was a United States Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He owned Madison Square Market in Madison Heights before retiring. He was a member of Sandy Bottom Christian Church and a member of the Elks Lodge in Lynchburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jerry Lynn N. Martin, and husband, Steve, of Amherst; and his grandson, Jared Steven Martin of Maryland.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Charles Stinson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Monelison Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc., P.O. Box 56, Madison Heights, VA 24572, or to the Madison Heights Baptist Church Building Fund.
