Linwood Hurst Obituary

Linwood L. Hurst Jr.
Lin was born in Norfolk, on May 27, 1949, and passed, surrounded by his family at his home in Lynchburg, on Saturday, July 7, 2007, after a seven month battle with cancer. He was the bravest man we knew.
Lin was a wonderful, devoted husband to Wanda Bryant Hurst for 35 years. He was also a loving Christian father to three children. He had one son, his main man, Neil, and two daughters, his sweethearts, Elizabeth and Season. They were his pride and joy. Lin had one grandson, Taylor Bryant, who was his partner in many adventures.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margarette Campbell Hurst; and his father, Linwood Hurst Sr.
He also leaves behind one mother-in-law, Doris Bryant Campbell, Mamma #2; two sisters-in-law, Denise Fitzgerald and husband, Doug, and Cindy B. Treadway and husband, Eddie; and one brother-in-law, Gregory N. Bryant and fiancée, Diane Mehaffey. He also leaves behind two nephews, Justin Fitzgerald and Chris Mehaffey; three nieces, Samantha and Mary Treadway and Katie Fitzgerald. He is survived on his father's side by two uncles, the Honorable R. Stanley Hurst and his wife, Sandy, and Ruben Hurst and his wife Maria. Lin is also survived by one sister, Star Hurst Dugger and family.
Lin graduated from Granby High School in May of 1967. He graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park.
He served with the United States Marines during the Vietnam War as a corporal.
He joined the Lynchburg Fire Department in 1973, and retired with 28 years of service as a captain.
He was a volunteer fireman with the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department for many years and retired with an honorary membership.
Lin taught many fire safety classes for the various Amherst County preschools and elementary schools. He was loved by all children.
Lin was a numanistic member and had an extensive coin collection. He was the owner of Walker Coins, named after his loving uncle, Howard Walker.
Lin's other love was his church. He attended Sandy Bottom Christian Church where he served as a Deacon and taught the youth group on Sunday evenings with Vicky Bailey.
The Hurst family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Lynchburg Fire Department for all their acts of kindness during Lin's illness, to the congregation of Sandy Bottom Christian Church for all their thoughts, prayers and support and all of their friends and family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, by Minister Jim Freeman at Sandy Bottom Christian Church in Madison Heights, with burial to follow in Woodland Church Cemetery in Colleen. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, at Sandy Bottom Christian Church.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Sandy Bottom Christian Church building fund and local volunteer fire departments and EMS.

Wanda, Elizabeth, Season, Neal and Taylor -
I pray for your peace during this time of loss of husband, father and grandfather. Growing up with Liz and the other kids, Lin always treated me as his own during our joint family vacations and outings, with watchful care and kindness. His trademark fun-loving smile and spirit will always be remembered. Losing somemone to cancer is an enduring heartache but please find comfort that he is now in Heaven, free of pain and suffering. Your close family support has been an inspiration to us all. God Bless the Hurst Family.

The fondest memory I have is the day when he would come home from the Marines and would play and tickle me, and also the day I was the flower girl in the wedding and dumped the flowerbasket when they said "Let us pray"

The world is a better place because Lin Hurst was in it, my life is more enriched because I had the good fortune to have friends like Lin and Wanda. He will be missed by Amanda Coppedge Bosky, my daughter, and myself. He was always the same, ever smiling, ever looking on the bright side, ever constant and true, dependable and interested in you. Almost perfect, and now he is! His faith has become sight! My love and prayers to Wanda and her family. Come see me soon. I'd love to serve you during this difficult time.
