Mack Mays Obituary

Mack G. Mays, Jr.

Mack Geralddane Mays, Jr., 47, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Born in Lynchburg on January 14, 1978, Mack was the beloved son of Janie Burks Mays of Amherst and the late Mack G. Mays, Sr.

Mack dedicated his life to the service of others, and his impact on the community will be felt for generations to come. For more than two decades, he served tirelessly as a first responder, beginning with the Amherst Life Saving Crew and Volunteer Fire Department. His commitment and leadership later led him to the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks and was proudly serving as Assistant Fire Chief at the time of his passing. Mack's courage, compassion, and selflessness were evident in every call he answered and every life he touched.

Beyond his professional commitments, Mack attended Ebenezer Baptist Church and worked with Nelson County Public Schools. His presence brought steadiness and kindness to those around him, whether in the school halls, firehouse, or sanctuary. He gave freely of his time, his skills, and his heart, never asking for recognition, but always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mack is survived by his loving mother, Janie Burks Mays; his fiancé and partner, Linda Bryant of Monroe; his sister, Shelia Shoemake (Greg) of Myrtle Beach; and two brothers, Pastor Jerry Mays (Renee) and Harold Mays (Kathy) both of Amherst. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who cherished his generous spirit and unwavering dedication.

A service celebrating Mack's life and legacy will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Dwayne Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In honor of Mack's lifelong service, memorial contributions may be made to the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 56, Madison Heights, VA 24572.
