Esther Hayes Obituary

Hayes - Esther "Kitty" was known for her vibrant personality and indomitable spirit. Her many accomplishments include teacher, supervisor, lobbyist, actor, vocalist and the very first black Ms. Senior America of New York State. We are sad to announce her passing on August 07, 2023 at the age of 95. She died peacefully in her sleep in Oklahoma City attended by loved ones. She had a full rich life and was widely loved and admired by both friends and family. She was born to Emmanuel and Ella Hicks in Beaver Falls, PA on January 30, 1928. After graduating high school in Camden, NJ she went on to attend Knoxville College for her Bachelors of Science, eventually achieving a Masters of Science degree in Educational Administration at Hofstra University. She taught in the Brentwood school district for 32 years and after retiring joined several theater, dance and choral groups. She also became a Golden Soror in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. After winning the title of Ms. Senior America of New York State she continued her association and love of that organization. I was a student of Mrs. Hayes in 1962 - 1963 South Elementary School in Brentwood behind The Entenmanns Plant .
She was one of the nicest teacher I ever had. I remember I did an impersonation comedy skit in her class.
I wish I lived closer to pay my respects but she was a classy lady .
Thank God she was my teacher

Mum 'Kitty' Hayes was one of the sweetest people I have had the pleasure to meet and love. She loved to sing make us laugh, and enjoyed life to the full. One special Xmas when Don Craig and Brigitte, all met up in NY to give her a wonderful Xmas, I remember like it was yesterday. We brought her from the Bristal to her condo to help decorate the tree, then again on Xmas day to celebrate together. She will always be in my heart and I send much love and condolences to Don and Craig, and the rest of the family for their loss, Miss Kitty will always be in the hearts of everyone that ever met her. RIP Mum Hayes.
